Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-More than 40 experiments and investigations help readers explore the body systems. Each activity includes a list of the required supplies (all readily available), a step-by-step procedure, and a scientific explanation of the results. The activities range from simple (how to test the sense of smell) to more complex (calculating the amount of horsepower used to walk and then run up stairs). Many projects teach basic scientific concepts. Suggestions for "More Fun Stuff to Do" encourage children to broaden and/or refine their observations. Additional information is provided in sidebars. Safety instructions and precautions are included. Although some of the experiments can be found in other sources such as Janice VanCleave's The Human Body for Every Kid (Wiley, 1995), Wiese's clear and lively presentation will aid students seeking project ideas and intrigue budding scientists.

From Booklist
The author of numerous science activity books (most recently Magic Science, 1998) offers this collection of demonstrations that illustrate scientific principles about the human body. The projects are arranged by system (nervous, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, skeletal, reproductive, and skin), and each project includes an introduction, a list of materials, procedural guidelines, and an explanation of the science involved. Numerous sidebars ("Science in Action" and "More Fun Stuff to Do") introduce related information and extension activities. Black line drawings appear on nearly every page, further clarifying details from the text. Introductory comments about the scientific method, references to adult help, and the appended glossary add to the book's appeal. A good choice for teachers hoping to perk up their science lessons or for kids searching for science fair projects. Kay Weisman

Review
Head to Toe Science offers wonderful experiments and contains explanations as to why experiments are done and the science behind them. Quite simply, it is the best human body activity book I have ever seen. . . This book is a must for any teacher of human body systems. We loved this!5
We used Head to Toe Science for our 3rd grade human body studies combined with Easy Make and Learn Projects: Human Body by Donald Silver and Patricia Wynne and had a BLAST!

Head to Toe Science provides the necessary information and vocabulary with easy to do experiments. Home Training Tools sells the book with a supply kit for [...] if you want, we just bought a stethoscope and were fine.

Everything was very clearly explained, we loved the depth (it was just right, not too light not too heavy) and experiments illustrated the concepts very well. I would use this with 2nd-5th graders. We covered one chapter a week, doing science everyday so in 11 weeks, we covered the human body but it can be stretched out for longer, especially with reading other books.

We will use this book again in 2nd grade with our youngest son. Thank you Jim Wiese for providing such an excellent resource for human body!

Great Find!!5
I am teaching a unit on the body and found this book to be most helpful and informative. My class thoroughly enjoyed the experiments as well. I will be using it for years to come with my students! Great find!

One more great book in a great series5
Easy to use directions. Keeps kids excited. Activities are grouped into sets, and explore each topic from many angles.
