Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 --A sci-fi comic-strip in picture book format. For his birthday a young space cadet, Peter, receives a simple robot whom he calls Chip, "because he was all in pieces." A missing bit (or byte) of memory from Peter's father's laboratory upgrades Chip to a more sophisicated level of functioning. The robot is set to sweeping the lab while father and son take a tour of the secret facility. They come back to discover that Chip has entered the Great Maze, the intricate nerve center of the space station. In their attempt to retrieve him, Chip has an accident, blows a few circuits, and is transformed into a thinking, speaking automaton. One of his many tricks includes doing Peter's math homework, but Mrs. Baines will not settle for artificial intelligence. Both the primitive watercolor cartoons and the combination of hi- and lo-tech scenes are reminiscent of TV's Jetsons. This extremely lightweight title appears to be first of a series of episodes about Peter and his metallic companion. It's as harmless and forgettable as most such fare.
