From the Inside Flap
In this tough but compassionate book, psychologist Dr. Maryann Rosenthal tells how to find a balance betwen loving your children and setting limits for them, between granting freedom and instilling discipline.
Finding that balance is not simple, but Dr. Rosenthal explains in plain English and through the use of many examples how parents can become both positive and proactive.
Specfically, parents will learn:
-A five-step program (A-D-U-L-T) for breaking down barriers between themselves and their teen.
-Why they should trust themselves to make good rules for teen behavior, then stick by them.
-How to help teens set and reach goals, shed stress, and develop strong character.
-The ways in which physical changes in the teen brain may be affecting behavior.
About the Author
Wife, mother, licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Maryann Rosenthal has lived through the same joys and trials as her clients - and more. As a divorced mother of four, Maryann remarried a widower with three daughters and became part of a blended family.
A popular and dynamic speaker, she appears frequently on radio and television to speak on parenting, family dynamics, and life achievement issues.
Advocating a course that engenders responsibility, respect, and a strong self-image for teens, Dr. Maryann is a voice for involved, interactive parenting and the results it engenders. Hers is the voice of experience.

excerpt from Chapter 6: Love, or the Magic of Real
"In any of life's arenas, truly successful people are those who are able to detach from unsuccessful and undesirable past events. This does not mean that they forget their mistakes, only that they are able to step back from them and grow.
Detachment does not mean to disconnect. Detachment allows parents to recognize and dismantle blame, eliminate any controlling response, and allow their teen to take responsibility for his or her actions.
Parents must examine their own lust for control that could be robbing the teen of taking responsibility for his or her own actions. This detachment is what it takes to truly love unconditionally."
Customer Reviews
The perfect stocking stuffer.
Be a Parent, Not a Pushover is an incredibly insightful and informative book. Dr. Rosenthal has done an excellent job of explaining the scientific reasons why teen behavior can change and then outlines a practical and sensible strategy to deal with these changes. This book provides the tools that every parent needs to enjoy a healthy relationship with their children.
I highly recommend this book to parents of all ages.
A "Must Read" for Parents of Teens
As a parent of two teens (son-13, daughter-15) in a "blended" family situation, this book is a welcome relief. Dr. Rosenthal has done a terrific job of describing what is happening in your teen's life; why he/she has suddenly become a stranger to you and, most importantly, what you need to do about it now.
The book is very well-organized and written with warmth and humor in a style which is user-friendly without being simplistic. I highly recommend this book.
