Many reforms undertaken in the name of greater student learning also apply to the ongoing learning of teachers. In Deep Change, Peery examines both theory and practice and recommends five key processes for increasing teacher learning, which will improve staff development at a minimal cost. Peery also includes numerous examples of teacher growth taken from diverse contexts.

Reflective Teaching Yields High Results
I love this book! Its pages are filled with stories of real life individuals who have seen significant improvement in student performance as a result of professional development. Peery gives you the theory, but she doesn't stop there. She uses illustration after illustration to prove that the strategies she suggests are tried and true. This book is essential for educators serving in a staff development and/or supervisory capacity. There are actual agendas for faculty meetings and workshops included! Teachers will love this book because they will see themselves in the pages. The teaching life is very complicated and Deep Change shines light on the good and the bad. Sometimes all we want to know is that we're not alone in our struggles, and reading this book helped me connect and identify with my teaching self in a valuable way. Some of the insights have given me the courage to begin to forgive myself for some of my failings as an instructor.
What our students need
Chock full of the kinds of common sense moves we all hope someone will someday make, this book takes the mystery out of how our students can be competitive with the world's movers and shakers, the teenaged innovators of the 21st century. Thank goodness Dr. Peery realized that common sense isn't as common as it should be, and wrote down all we need to enact in plain-speak. For our children to compete, their education needs to change. Education can only change when forward-thinking educators evolve. Even if you don't have children (even if you can't name a single person under the age of 21), you care about the future of your country. You don't need to march on Washington, or collect pennies or hold endless bake sales. Do get a copy of this book into the hands of every elementary, middle and high school principal in your area. And let that be your good deed for the decade.
