Review
An essential resource for educators and others who work with children. --James P. Comer, MD
Yardsticks is an indispensable resource for educators who want to be responsive to the needs, talents, and aspirations of all the children they teach. --Larry Dieringer, Executive Director, Educators for Social Responsibility
From the Author
Practical info to help parents/teachers understand children. This book is about children in school. It is designed for both parents and teachers and provides easy reference to expectations about children's growth and development in the classroom. I have tried in this small volume to consolidate a good deal of theory with years of professional experience in schools. My goal is to present important information in a readable format without compromising the key ideas passed down from the worlds of anthropology, child development, pediatrics and education. I hope you will find the information about a particular age immediately useful, and will also be captured by the obvious patterns of development. Enjoy the book. I hope you find it useful in your work with children.

Customer Reviews
Excellent for "At-Your-Fingertips" Information!
As a school counselor and a classroom teacher I found this a wonderful resource for finding quick information on the developmental stages children go through. Each staff member at our school was given a copy and we discussed it at staff meetings. Everyone seemed excited to have such an easy-to-read book that was packed with such valuable information. It has helped teachers to understand that often children are just behaving according to their developmental age! I'd recommend it to all educators and parents!
Practical and easy to use guide for parents and teachers
This book is a good, practical guide to child development. It focuses on children at school, but gives honest social/emotional and cognitinve development guidelines. This would be useful to any parent wondering if their child is on target, as well as teachers.
Age appropriate expectations
Organized by ages this book tells what you as a parent or teacher can expect of the child and what is too much to expect. As a Reading Specialist this book has been invaluable in planning for grades 1 through 5.
