The Way to Start a DayThe Way to Start a Day by Byrd Baylor
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.53
Byrd Baylor doesn't need to say "this is from a Southwest Indian perspective", it just is. She has done some of the best Southwest and multicultural stuff ever. She has been one of my faves since the time I first got interested in Children's Lit. This one is an especially good multicultural perspective on greeting the day.
The Table Where Rich People Sit (Aladdin Picture Books)The Table Where Rich People Sit (Aladdin Picture Books) by Byrd Baylor

Adopted By the EaglesAdopted By the Eagles by Paul Goble
Buy used from: $36.20
This one's great because it has a special page discussing Goble's connection to Chief Edgar Red Cloud. Paul Goble is the ultimate example of the outsider who came in with respect and humility to create some of the most celebrated books featuring Plains Indian stories. We have most of his stuff, and I am just featuring the first five that pop up :)
Star BoyStar Boy by Paul Goble
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.90
We actually have this image framed. It reminds us of the classic tradition of, "If a girl lets a guy cover her in a blanket, she has accepted him"
Jingle DancerJingle Dancer by Cynthia Leitich Smith
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $4.67
There are many reasons why this book is great. First, a good story about a modern Indian kid. So modern, she uses videos of family dancing to help her learn. It's rare you got this. Also, the story is very old style traditional in the way the dancer is dancing for family members who can't.
PowwowPowwow by George Ancona
Buy new: $8.50 / Used from: $1.34
If you are a teacher in an urban area, you MUST have this book. Sooner or later you will have an Indian student or you will have some kid ask what a Pow-wow is because there is one happening in town next week. This book is the simplest, clearest, and most accessible explanation for what happens in a Pow-wow that I have encountered.

A Boy Becomes a Man at Wounded KneeA Boy Becomes a Man at Wounded Knee by Ted Wood

The Boy Who Lived with the SealsThe Boy Who Lived with the Seals by Rafe Martin
Buy used from: $12.18
There aren't that many good Northwest Indian kids books out there. This one is a fun telling of a Chinook legend. A teacher could combine this with teaching a few Chinook words, and share how this nation's language was used up and down the the Northwest.
The Ghost DanceThe Ghost Dance by Alice McLerran
Buy used from: $0.22
More a book for older kids or to touch the inner child in us, this book might make a good companion to the Ted Wood book above on Wounded Knee. The art is mixed media and its beautiful.

Knots on a Counting Rope (Reading Rainbow Book)Knots on a Counting Rope (Reading Rainbow Book) by John Archambault
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $0.01
Yeah, its old school. But back in the day when there was almost nothing, this was one of the few Indian books out there that treated the community with a little respect. AND, we own it with pride :)

A beautiful Northwest Indian based story. The illustrations are impressively accurate. I also like the discussion of "Northwest Coast Motifs" discussed at the end.

The Magic Of Spider WomanThe Magic Of Spider Woman by Lois Duncan

The story can get a little wordy and heavy for little kids, but the images are magical. The main reason I got was the art by Shonto Begay :)
