We have most of the Iktomi books. A wonderful combination of a classic character combined with modern in jokes.

A great story with authentic Alaskan Native terms. Especially good for younger children (patterns, etc.), and all our Indian friends love it.

Byrd Baylor doesn't need to say "this is from a Southwest Indian perspective", it just is. She has done some of the best Southwest and multicultural stuff ever. She has been one of my faves since the time I first got interested in Children's Lit. This one is an especially good multicultural perspective on greeting the day.

The Caldecot winner. A classic tale on connecting to animals.

This one's great because it has a special page discussing Goble's connection to Chief Edgar Red Cloud. Paul Goble is the ultimate example of the outsider who came in with respect and humility to create some of the most celebrated books featuring Plains Indian stories. We have most of his stuff, and I am just featuring the first five that pop up :)

There are many reasons why this book is great. First, a good story about a modern Indian kid. So modern, she uses videos of family dancing to help her learn. It's rare you got this. Also, the story is very old style traditional in the way the dancer is dancing for family members who can't.

A great creation story. Also, one of the few quality mainstream books out there featuring California Indians.

This is one of Goble's most recent books. You can really see his maturity as an artist and storyteller in this one.

A beautiful story about a girl and her family as they encounter this strang outworlder and his crew, Columbus. Dorris is both indigenous and well regarded for his quality non-fictional work on native issues.

Another one of Dorris's great chapter books. This one is about appreciating a person's unique talents and coming of age.

Looking at an American Indian icon from his life as a boy. A classic device done well

Many classrooms like to do dreamcatchers as their Indian craft activity. This telling of the Ojibway version of this tradition is one of the most accessible for young children

More a book for older kids or to touch the inner child in us, this book might make a good companion to the Ted Wood book above on Wounded Knee. The art is mixed media and its beautiful.

We're a little partial to Plains based stories because Tami's Lakota. This one's just a beautiful uplifting multigenerational story.

A beautiful Northwest Indian based story. The illustrations are impressively accurate. I also like the discussion of "Northwest Coast Motifs" discussed at the end.

Nice book with beautiful illustrations. I like how it combines universal words such as "Grandma" for G, and Dine specific words such as "Ooljee" for O.

Not really a "children's book". More a collection of legends with an accompanying image. Good for someone looking for short stories memorize of for a teacher looking to get kids' imaginations active.

She has a series of photo books featuring people from around the world on central themes. This one is people from everywhere expressing love, including several images of a Navajo family. Simple, and ideal to teach young children about the world.

The story can get a little wordy and heavy for little kids, but the images are magical. The main reason I got was the art by Shonto Begay :)
