Suddenly finding the perfect science-fair project doesn't seem such a daunting task! This starter kit gives children nineteen microorganism-growing ideas to choose from, all with easy-to-use prepared petri dishes. The instructions are easy for kids from age eight to follow as they get a good grasp of the scientific method, and the pre-sterilized dishes and nutrient bottles take the guesswork out of growing colonies. All children have to do is place a sample in the dish and pour in the culture medium, which gels around the sample to provide food for colony growth. As the colonies grow, a unique process lends them a bright red color that makes for simple observation and counting. The ready-to-use kit contains six each of the following: pre-treated Easygel petri dishes, bottles of Easygel nutrient culture medium, and sterile pipettes, plus three inches of nickel chrome wire.

Great for Science Fair
I used this product with my 8 year old son. We had wonderful results sampling his Dad's shoes and our dog's paws (the shoes grew many more microbes). My son was able to dip a q-tip in the nutrient solution (a small bottle), swap the sample, redip the q-tip and then pour the solution into the petri dish. Parent supervision is required - we are not sure what the nutrient solution is and he needed some help so the dishes didn't spill before the solution gelled. Also, we are not sure what kinds of microbes grew or how harmful they might be. I taped them shut but they should not be played with or carried around the house. And I washed our very cooperative dog's feet. It took three or four days before visible microbe colonies showed up so there was some anxiety. But after that, the microbe colonies prospered. We had a control sample (nothing swabbed but still dipped the q-tip in the bottle) and it didn't grow bacteria. You can buy petri dishes for very little money and make your own nutrient but for an elementary school student (and his non-scientist mom), this was perfect.
We took pictures of the microbe colonies in the dishes and used them on his board because the school didn't want the microbes at the fair!
Awesome!
My son did a science project of bacteria growth on toothbrushes that was kept in different areas. When it was time to swab the brushes for tesing bacteria to grow in dishes, I crossed my fingers. Two days passed with no growth just like expected but by the third day it was amazing to see the growth. At the end of our growth period the whole family was amazed at the results in the dishes. This kit was very easy and the instruction book is filled with great info and easy to follow directions. I will definatly buy this product again.
Good product, but description was incomplete
The Easy Gel Petri Dishes were easy to use. They had good instructions and were pretty much fool proof.
Please note, there are only 6 petri dishes in each box. If you are doing a school science project, that may not be enough. The description does not indicate how many dishes are included.
It would also be great if the instructions gave you pictures of different types of bacteria and fungus you might be growing so the kids can understand better what they see. We spent hours trying to find info online.
