Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
As original Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth quit the band to pursue a solo career, or was fired (depending on who you believe), Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony carried on by hiring Sammy Hagar. Hagar was a middling artist on his own, but he proved to be a powerhouse when placed in front of hard rock's most muscular and innovative instrumental unit. On 5150--the title is police code for "escaped lunatic"--you can hear the band's excitement at having struck a winning combination. Songs such as "Why Can't This Be Love," "Dreams," "Best of Both Worlds," and "Love Walks In" combine to make this the early high-watermark of the Van Hagar era. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews
This is NOT your AVERAGE "4 Star" Album...
Like a lot of people, I've been hearing VH on the radio for...well for a really long time. Unlike a lot of people, I've only starting buying albums in the last couple of years, and every VH I get consistently becomes a regular spinner on my player. I've got almost all the albums with DLR (minus DIver Down) and am now dipping into Van Hagar.
I got 5150 about two weeks ago and can't stop spinning it. I'm finding that Van Halen was certainly NOT THE WORSE for deciding to work with the HUGE TALENT of Sammy Hagar (and vice-versa) after parting with legendary front man David Lee Roth. I just ordered OU whatever, 812 (oh, I get it now) because I LOVE 5150 and I listened to the song clips for that, too, and they sound great, both songs I recognized and ones I'd never heard.
For some of you older fans: LOSE the baggage, PAH-LEEEZZ.
For newer fans, add about 1/2 to a full star to all overall ratings for Van Hagar albums, just to make up for the pure whine factor. Buy, enjoy and then buy more--with DLR or Sammy. VH ROCKS!
Good debut
This is the first VH record with sammy on vocals. This is their biggest selling album with sammy as the singer. It went 6x platnium. They did changer their soung quite a bit. Love walks in and dreams and why cant this be love, which all are hit singles is a departure from the usually rock sound of diamond dave, but they do have a good rockin tune Summer Nights
Pure Rock'n roll n' funiest riffs
This Van Halen cd is amazing. it's very 80's with the oberheim keyboard classic sound. The guitar riffs are great and it feels like a party. The guys sound like they're having fun. Includes classics like "Dreams", and "Summer Nights" from the Sammy Hagar era. For Van halen fan's and people who loves good good rock'nroll stuff is absolutely recommended.
