Despite box-office failure and the highly publicized fatigue of its star at the time of its fall 2001 release, Glitter is a surprisingly effective vehicle for pop diva Mariah Carey, who will delight her many fans in her appealing screen debut. The standard rags-to-riches plot unfolds with the predictability of falling dominoes, but there's simple, infectious charm in Carey's portrayal of Billie Frank, an urban thrush who's discovered by ace club DJ Dice (Max Beesley) and rises to stadium-filling stardom in the post-disco New York of 1983. One hoary subplot works (Billie's quest for her long-lost mother) and another doesn't (Dice's debt to a threatening rival), while Carey plays a variant of herself with a gentle blend of vulnerability and good-girl fortitude. With a bright supporting cast and a stellar soundtrack, this movie didn't deserve the bad rap it got, and like her determined yet delicate character, Carey emerges unscathed despite considerable odds against her. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews
Pretty good, even though most people are bashing about it.
All critics called it really bad but in my opinion, I think this is a pretty good movie. Why didn't they criticized Britney as much? I think her movie was far worst than Mariah's. Of course, if you're a Mariah fan, you'll probably enjoy it like I did. She started acting in this movie so, nobody could expect much but I think she did a pretty good job for a first-timer. Anyway, 9/11 didn't help her either so that wasn't her year. I give it 5 stars despite all the critics out there. MARIAH FOREVER!!!
I LOVE GLITTER!!!
Even my 12 yr old loved Glitter and cried. It was a good movie that came out during the wrong time...9/11. So that sunk the movie and cd because people weren't in the mood for it. I really enjoyed it and I own it.
Not As Bad As They Say
Glitter believe it or not is acutally a good musical movie. When released back in 2001 there hadn't been a good urban music movie in a while and this movie more than makes up for it. I loved the fact that movie featured classic eighties tunes like Tell Me If You Stiil & Moments In Love. Mariah Carey did good in her first starring role and the soundtrack was one of the best of the year, courstey of Ms. Carey herself and music legends Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. I give this film 5/5, just watch it and enjoy it.
