Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The New York Times called Pat Metheny's 1992 Grammy Award-winning Secret Story the most sweepingly ambitious album that the jazz guitarist has yet recorded...a nearly 80-minute world-music suite with symphonic underpinnings. If the album functioned then, in the words of critic Stephen Holden, as part travelogue and part soundtrack for a nonexistent film, then this expanded and re-mastered edition can best be described as the director's cut. Composer and guitarist Metheny revisited and restored five previously unreleased tracks in the studio over the last year, and he's collected them on a bonus disc. More pastoral in tone than most of the original material on Secret Story and with a decidedly cinematic, orchestral feel these tracks are like the deleted scenes from a deeply evocative yet wordless narrative feature. Back in '92, Metheny declared that Secret Story was unlike anything I've ever done. It's the largest in scope - 80 people were involved in the record - but it's also the most intimate record I've done.
Customer Reviews
not my favorite metheny , but still very good w qualifications
as i sit here listening to this recording on a saturday morning (on headphones) i'm taken back to memories of pat's tour for this project . this is an opinion of the disc without the additional material . i saw the concert(s) in both orlando and tampa . pat was truly blessed to have both GIL GOLDSTIEN and JIM BEARD on pianos , keybords and various other instruments . if memory serves , group stalwart STEVE RODBY was on electric and acoustic basses . THIS WAS THE WAY TO SEE AND HEAR this tremendously ambitious recording . PAT has given us all such an embarrassment of compositional and performance riches , that it really comes down to preferances . if you're fairly new to pat , you'll probably feel this is the greatest thing since sliced bread . those of us who have been on board since his first ECM recordings know this project is hit and miss . a lot of decisions pat made in the studio are splendid , others much less so . i truly wish the concert could have been captured on DVD (particularly TAMPA) as the theater blew the BOB CARR'S doors off . bury me with pat's whole recorded output , but shuffle this in the bottom third .
For Completists only......
Secrets Story is probably my favorite Pat Metheny album. From the children's choir of "Above the Treetops" to the sea shanty-like accordion sounds of "Antonia", this is an album that's perfect for almost any occasion. It definitely tells a story throughout. When I heard it was being reissued with bonus songs from the session, I was delighted and anxious to get my own copy.
After hearing the 5 extra songs, I have to say, I'm disappointed. They're are "ok" but not spectacular and barely worthy of being on this classic cd. As I listened, I was hoping at least the final song would make the purchase worth my while but that wasn't stunning either. If you're interested in "Secret Story", stick to the less expensive original as the extra songs on the reissue are on a separate cd. If you already have the original, then be assured you have the best version.
Secret Story better this time!
I have always loved this CD since I bought the cassette version nearly 15 years ago. I got the CD used two years later. This deluxe version is way better than the original CD. I loved the four bonus tracks!!! I have already transferred the tracks to my computer, and now they'll be on my Ipod all the time.
