Consistent: That’s the word that best describes the discography of New York’s Nada Surf, the jingle-jangle pop trio now in its second decade. With heavenly harmonies and swollen choruses, the band can always be counted on to deliver an album’s worth of hummable, single-worthy melodies. With lyrics that are pointed, yet restrained, the music--often acoustically driven but electrically charged--is the message. Songs like "See These Bones" (a Teenage Fanclub knock-off featuring Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard), the optimistic "I Like What You Say," the louder "Weightless," and especially "Ice on the Wing" are the brand of pop cut that takes merely a couple listens to feel like it's been in the listening arsenal for years. Even the more somber tracks are buoyed by tranquil instrumentation or, on the heartrending closer, "The Film Did Not Go ‘Round," by the backing vocals of the underrated Lianne Smith. --Scott Holter

my first exposure
This is my first Nada Surf cd and I've pretty much been sold. I don't know how to really give an in depth review. I just know how much I like it. I know I could listen to the opening track See These Bones over and over. I told my wife the song was like a flower opening up and eventually getting to full bloom. It just kepps geting better and better as the song unfolds. Also the second song Whose Authority sounds like a lost Teenage Fanclub song which is high praise in my book. I'm glad I bought this cd. I've been listening to it quite often.
Grandaddy Lives!!!!
It wasn't until well after "Just Like The Fambly Cat" was released that I became a fan of the late, great Grandaddy. I thought, "well, at least...".
So I check this album out without having heard anything off it and it just blew me away - I felt like this was a new (and terrific) Grandaddy album!! Usually I'd mock or deride a band for copying the style of a predecessor, but honestly, I'm just not familiar enough with Nada Surf to make that call. Anyway, the vocals are stunningly similar to Jason Lytle. And so is the production, with layered guitars and strong melodies. I just love this album and bonus cd is flawless. I've been listening to it repeatedly and many tracks are perfect. I hope my comparison with Grandaddy is not seen as a slight because it's anything but - it's a total compliment.
A very strong album
I lived threough tthe cusp odf tghe sixties and this is my first review ever in Amazon - I heard of this band via NPR's "All Songs Considered Concerts" podcats (most highly recommended) and Nada Surf's concert grew on me - infectious power pop with kindred sensibilities. I have played that podcast at least twenty times. I bought this "record" - the limited edition with the extra disc - and also their older CD "Let Go." The song "See These Bones" is better on disc than on the elequent podcast. "Whose Authority," "Beautiful Beat" and "Weightless" are also very strong melodies. I am drawn to the acoustic version of "I Like What You Say" on the freebie disk. I really like this band and can see continuing to buy their music. "Let Go" is even better and this CD is very very very good. Wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars.
Buy it.
