Heathers (THX Version)Heathers (THX Version)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.94
(B-) Black high school comedy/satire. Really dated in a lot of ways, but still reasonably entertaining.
A Simple PlanA Simple Plan
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.98
(A-) When I first saw this years ago I was a bit disappointed. I can't imagine why. Performances are great all around and Smith condenses his outlandish novel beautifully into a tight, inevitable story.
The Ninth GateThe Ninth Gate
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.94
(C) Polanski makes a "Rosemary's Baby" cash-in 30 years after the fact. It's never quite boring, but damned if anything ever actually happens in this movie.
Saw IV (Unrated Widescreen Edition)Saw IV (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $3.71
(C+)It's totally impossible to take these films seriously anymore, with the comically labyrinthine plot and hackneyed dialogue, but the over the top set pieces and gruesome violence continue to make them sufficiently amusing.
There Will Be Blood [Theatrical Release]There Will Be Blood [Theatrical Release]
(B+) Another Oscar-bait historical epic, kinda typical but well done as such. Lewis is indeed excellent and I enjoy the atypical setting.
Hellraiser 3: Hell on EarthHellraiser 3: Hell on Earth
Buy used from: $6.20
(D-) Terrible beyond all imagining. I'm not even gonna go into it, there's no space.
Groundhog Day - 15th Anniversary EditionGroundhog Day - 15th Anniversary Edition
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.49
(A-) Normally I'm not too much for overly sentimental films, but I still enjoy this one very much. Murray's best performance until "The Life Aquatic" and it's actually intelligently written in spite of the high concept plot.
Juno [Theatrical Release]Juno [Theatrical Release]
(B-) This actually gets better when it moves from half-amusing, half-grating comedy to a more emotional, manipulative approach. Can't stand the soundtrack, though, and Garner is a ghoul.
The Squid and the Whale (Special Edition)The Squid and the Whale (Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.99
(C+) A "family problems of rich people" film. Well made and performed, though it never entirely comes alive.
The Boys From BrazilThe Boys From Brazil
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.00
(C) I find the premise amusing, but the film itself is often talky and kinda dull.
ElectionElection
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.68
(B) Harsh, nasty satire. It's not generally hilarious, but it's amusing, and it works.
The EyeThe Eye
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.99
(B) An above average Asian Ghost film, in spite of some dubious effects. Has an atypically likable protagonist, and it gains points for being a rip-off of both the 'Sixth Sense' and 'Ringu', rather than just the latter.
Paul Leni's The Man Who LaughsPaul Leni's The Man Who Laughs
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $19.21
(C+) Sometimes visually impressive and Veidt gives a good performance, but this film just seems to go on and on, as silent pics sometimes do.
HH
Buy used from: $2.00
(B-) Turns out they make by-the-numbers serial killer films in South Korea too. Far from remarkable, but it's capably made and resonably interesting.
The Blood of HeroesThe Blood of Heroes
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.44
(B+) A post-apocalyptic sports movie. You don't see a lot of those. Impressively grimey, and it has unusually likable characters for such a flim. A good watch.
Calvaire: The OrdealCalvaire: The Ordeal
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $3.45
(B+) Belgian rural-psycho horror film. It uses the cliches of the genre, but it plays with them effectively and is suprisingly psychologically minded. An overlooked film. Also, the dance scene is one of the most bizarre things I've seen in a long time.
The Parallax ViewThe Parallax View
Buy used from: $16.53
(B+) Eerie, paranoid thriller about political assassinations. Too bad Beatty isn't very likable, but this is a very intriguing film anyway.
Winter KillsWinter Kills
Buy used from: $2.87
(C+) Truly bizarre black comedy. It's moderately entertaining, if something of a mess, though I can't help but appreciate how it mocks conspiracy theories.
Tell Me SomethingTell Me Something
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.97
(B) Pretty much a by-the-numbers giallo, but from turn of the millennium Korea. Fairly typical, but it's stylish and I like the genre.
Lifeboat (Special Edition)Lifeboat (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.48
(B) Claustrophobic war-time drama. Not great by Hitchcock standards, but this is still a solid film, though the lapses into propaganda don't hold up so well.
The RelicThe Relic
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.69
(B-) This is just about as much of a B-movie as any big-budget, wide-release pic you'll see. It's silly, but that's part of the fun and the monster is neat. Also, hope you like the word "hypothalamus".
MarebitoMarebito
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $5.54
(B-) Inexplicable Japanese horror film involving vast underground caverns, evil creepy subhumnoid creatures and a feral, cannibalistic chick. I love some of the ideas in it, but it's pretty haphazard, as you'd expect consider it was shot in 8 days.
Capricorn OneCapricorn One
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.58
(B) A very 70's paranoid thriller about a botched attempt to fake a trip to Mars. I like the premise and it's capably put together, with an appealing lead performance from James Brolin.
Cache (Hidden)Cache (Hidden)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.48
(A-) Severely unnerving drama about a family that receives a series of tapes of their lives and how they react to this bizarre harassment. It's effectively low-key, and one of those rare ambiguous films that justifies the uncertainty, rather than just using it as a copout.
Dynamite WarriorDynamite Warrior
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.82
(C+) Obscenely goofy Thai martial-arts film. Some of the action is pretty good, but the Asian humor doesn't much fly with me.
Conan the Barbarian - Collector's EditionConan the Barbarian - Collector's Edition
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.85
(B+) Enormously entertaining sword and sorcery flick. It's a tad overlong, but it's fun and has plenty of action.
Orson Welles' The TrialOrson Welles' The Trial
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $2.48
(B+) A visually remarkable film with a very good central performance from Perkins. Unfortunately, the source material eventually lets them down, as it proves a bit too monotonous by the end.
KidnappedKidnapped
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.97
(A-) This lost Bava film is a remarkably good, relentlessly paced crime-thriller. A few of the performances are a bit over the top, but this is a gripping, endlessly watchable film. The best I've seen from him.
The Darjeeling LimitedThe Darjeeling Limited
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $6.83
(B) Yes, this is more or less paint-by-numbers Anderson, with his deadpan humor, alienated families and formal, stylized visuals. Still, it's a good pattern, and Anderson knows what he's doing.
CarnosaurCarnosaur
Buy used from: $14.98
(D) This has a lot of gore and adorable dinosaurs but the hideous D-movie traits, from the painful synth score to the presence of Clint Howard, overwhelm most potential camp value.
The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.00
(A-) I didn't fully appreciate this one the first time, but this is another excellent film from Wes Anderson. Perhaps his least funny film, but it has his most fully-realized characters and story.
