Best In Music 2007
By an Amazon.com customer
Freedom's RoadFreedom's Road by John Mellencamp
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.55
I don't know what it was, but this was not Mellencamp's best effort. There were some good songs here like "Someday", "Freedom's Road", "Rural Route" and "Jim Crow".
Not Too LateNot Too Late by Norah Jones
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.35
On her third album Jones repeats the same formula that made her first album so popular--quiet, intimate jazzy numbers. The formula wears thin here and you long for her to stretch her creativity. Average.
A Weekend in the CityA Weekend in the City by Bloc Party
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.75
Bloc Party's second album didn't quite match the immediacy of their first, but the band still managed to put out an album with several good songs like "The Prayer", "On" and "Sunday".
Life in Cartoon MotionLife in Cartoon Motion by Mika
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.10
For me, Mika's "Life In Cartoon Motion" was one of the best in 2007. He was creative, fun, thoughtful, witty and talented. Some of my favorites were "Grace Kelly", "Lollipop", "Any Other World", "Billy Brown" and "Happy Ending".
Neon BibleNeon Bible by Arcade Fire
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.16
Arcade Fire's second album might have surpassed their debut. One of the better albums released in 2007. Has "Keep The Car Running", "Intervention" and "Windowsill".
We Were Dead Before the Ship Even SankWe Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse
Buy new: $13.97 / Used from: $7.18
Modest Mouse's third major label album was entertaining--and even better than their previous. Has "Dashboard", "Fire It Up", "Florida" and "Parting Of The Sensory".
Yours Truly, Angry MobYours Truly, Angry Mob by Kaiser Chiefs
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.40
Equally as good as their debut, Kaiser Chief's second album failed to garner the attention of their first. Has "Ruby", "The Angry Mob", "Everything Is Average Nowadays" and "Try Your Best".
Year ZeroYear Zero by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.89
Reznor returned with a mixed album that didn't quite equal 2005's "With Teeth". However, it did have some noteworthy songs such as "Survivalism", "The Good Soldier", "Capital G", "The Warning" and "The Great Destroyer".
American Doll PosseAmerican Doll Posse by Tori Amos
Buy new: $13.97 / Used from: $5.49
Tori went a long way towards restoring her former musical glories with "American Doll Posse", but once again I disagree with her choice of putting 23 songs on a disc. Has "Big Wheel", "Bouncing Off Clouds", "Teenage Hustling", "Programmable Soda" and "Velvet Revolution".
Snakes & ArrowsSnakes & Arrows by Rush
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.66
Rush returned with an average album. I don't think they've made a good one since 1993's "Counterparts". "Snakes & Arrows" is quite the mixed album of goods. Has "Far Cry", "The Main Monkey Business" and "We Hold On".
VoltaVolta by Björk
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.63
I liked the packaging, and the album was better than her previous two no matter what other Bjork fans might have said. Has "Earth Intruders", "The Dull Flame Of Desire" and "Declare Independence".
The Boy with No NameThe Boy with No Name by Travis
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.99
Continuing their formula from 1999's "The Man Who" the band made a reasonably good album that went virtually unnoticed in 2007. Has "Selfish Jean", "Battleships" and "My Eyes".
Black Rain: Tour Edition (Bonus CD)Black Rain: Tour Edition (Bonus CD) by Ozzy Osbourne
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.95
The Ozzman returned with a pretty decent album, certainly better than his last album back in 2001. Has "I Don't Wanna Stop", "Black Rain" and "Lay Your World On Me".
The Sun And The MoonThe Sun And The Moon by The Bravery
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.99
The Bravery returned with their second album, but this time it seemed no one was listening. I think it was equally as good as their debut with "Believe", "Time Won't Let Me Go" and "Tragedy Bound".
Light at the End of the WorldLight at the End of the World by Erasure
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.23
Erasure came back with an average album for 2007. I didn't like this as much as 2005's "Nightbird". Has "I Could Fall In Love With You", "How My Eyes Adore You" and "When A Lover Leaves You".
Breakfast in BedBreakfast in Bed by Joan Osborne
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.73
Back with her second album in 9 months, Osborne continued to prove that she's a great vocalist in need of some great original material. Here, for the third album in a row, she digs through other people's classics and produces some of her own originals. Has "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "Cream Dream" and "Break Up To Make Up".
Eat Me, Drink MeEat Me, Drink Me by Marilyn Manson
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.83
Manson produced one of his weakest albums in a long while. Here, he sounds out of original ideas. Has "Heart-Shaped Glasses" and "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3".
Memory Almost FullMemory Almost Full by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $0.11
One of McCartney's better efforts in quite some time. Has "Dance Tonight", "Ever Present Past", "Mr. Bellamy", "Vintage Clothes", "That Was Me", "House Of Wax" and "The End Of The End".
CourageCourage by Paula Cole
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.98
Paula Cole returned after 8 years to little notice. The album was average and not exactly what I wanted to hear from her, but it had "Lovelight", "El Greco", "Hard To Be Soft" and "I Wanna Kiss You".
TheologyTheology by Sinead O'Connor
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.90
O'Connor continued to avoid pop music and the mainstream with yet another album of odds and sods. Two discs of the same material recorded in slightly different ways. Overlong. Has a moving version of "I Don't Know How To Love Him".
The ReminderThe Reminder by Feist
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.50
Feist must have hit the jackpot with "1234" in the iPod commerical giving it a sales jolt. The album was average, but "1234" certainly is catchy along with "My Moon My Man" and "Sealion".
Our Love to AdmireOur Love to Admire by Interpol
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.99
I didn't enjoy this as much as the band's first two albums. Has "The Heinrich Maneuver", "No I In Threesome" and "Who Do You Think?"
ZeitgeistZeitgeist by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.98
I hand it to Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain for trying to revive Smashing Pumpkins, but they only created a meat and potatoes album. Maybe next time. Has "Doomsday Clock", "7 Shades Of Black" and "Bring The Light".
Time on EarthTime on Earth by Crowded House
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.93
Crowded House returned after 14 years with a new album virtually no one noticed. Not my favorite, in fact my least favorite from the band. Has "Don't Stop Now" and "Transit Lounge".
The ElseThe Else by They Might Be Giants
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.98
TMBG's released one of their weakest albums to date with "The Else". Where's "Mink Car"?? Has "The Cap'm", "Contrecoup" and "The Mesopotamians".
Beauty & CrimeBeauty & Crime by Suzanne Vega
Buy new: $12.97 / Used from: $4.45
An average Vega album, certainly no "99.9F" or "Nine Objects Of Desire". Has "The Zephyr & I", "New York Is A Woman" and "Edith Wharton's Figurine".
Planet EarthPlanet Earth by Prince
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.87
Prince failed to capitalize on "3121", but he did make a decent album with "Guitar", "The One U Wanna C", "Chelsea Rodgers" and "Resolution".
AfterwordsAfterwords by Collective Soul
Buy new: $29.98 / Used from: $15.83
Collective Soul turned in an above average album released only through Target stores. Bad idea as no one noticed. Has "New Vibration", "What I Can Give You", "All That I Know", "Hollywood" and "Adored".
Life With YouLife With You by The Proclaimers
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.87
The Proclaimers are always reliable and "Life With You" does not disappoint. Maybe not their best work, but the title track is worth the price of admission alone.
Echoes, Silence, Patience & GraceEchoes, Silence, Patience & Grace by Foo Fighters
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.39
Foo Fighters made an average album with songs like "The Pretender", "Erase Replace" and "Long Road To Ruin".
ShineShine by Joni Mitchell
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $2.35
9 years since her last album of original work, Joni produced an extremely lackluster album. Has "This Place", "If I Had A Heart" and "Night Of The Iguana".
MagicMagic by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.06
Springsteen and company try to re-ignite that "Born To Run"/"Born In The USA" fire, but just ended up missing the mark. Has "Radio Nowhere", "You'll Be Comin' Down" and "Magic".
Songs of Mass DestructionSongs of Mass Destruction by Annie Lennox
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.81
Lennox returned after 4 years with a good album. Has "Dark Road", "Love Is Blind", "Ghosts In My Machine", "Lost", "Coloured Bedspread" and "Sing".
RevivalRevival by John Fogerty
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.97
Fogerty returned to Fantasy records, but the album isn't quite the revival expected. Has several good songs, but doesn't quite hold up as a whole. Has "Don't You Wish It Was True", "River Is Waiting" and "I Can't Take It No More".
Join the ParadeJoin the Parade by Marc Cohn
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.49
Cohn released his 4th album to no fanfare. Mature, but not his best work. has "Listening To Levon", "The Calling" and "Live Out The String".
HourglassHourglass by Dave Gahan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.81
Average second album from Depeche Mode front man Dave Gahan. Has "Kingdom".
Long Road Out of EdenLong Road Out of Eden
Buy used from: $7.63
Perhaps the most disappointing reunion of 2007. The Eagles made a two disc album, their first in 28 years, and sold it only through Wal Mart. Bad idea. Has "How Long", "No More Walks In The Wood", "Busy Being Fabulous", "Waiting In The Weeds", "You Are Not Alone" and "Last Good Time In Town".
As I AmAs I Am by Alicia Keys
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.00
Alicia Keys made a decent album with songs like "No One", "Superwoman" and "Sure Looks Good To Me".
Red Carpet MassacreRed Carpet Massacre by Duran Duran
Buy new: $12.97 / Used from: $4.52
Duran Duran turned in a 50/50 with the first 6 tracks being great and the last half being weak. Has "The Valley", "Red Carpet Massacre", "Nite-Runner", "Falling Down" and "Tempted".
SystemSystem by Seal
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.49
Seal returns to form with a more upbeat album in the vein of his debut. Has "Amazing", "Just Like Before", "System", "Dumb", "The Right Life" and "Rolling".
