Colour It InColour It In by The Maccabees
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $0.01
quite honest, playful and refreshing. like if bloc party were still super-awesome and actually indie sounding.
Make Another WorldMake Another World by Idlewild
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.24
to me this band defines scottish alt-rock, no question. their sound continues to epitomize the outer (and inner?) hebrides. most tracks have more of a slight edge than the previous (equally delightful) 'warnings/promises'. for less of an edge and an even greater gaelic influence, check out roddy's solo album of 06 'my secret is my silence'.
Tillbaka Till SamtidenTillbaka Till Samtiden by Kent
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $16.99
obviously this album is done entirely in swedish. it doesnt really matter - it is kent. has a bit more of an electronic undertone than predecessor 'du & jag doden'. obviously quite near a perfect album.
Beyond the NeighbourhoodBeyond the Neighbourhood by Athlete
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.52
probably have listened to 'hurricane' at least three-thousand forty-seven times by this point. it is an improvement on last two albums, though clearly nothing mind-bottling. this is an entirely solid album from a consistently agreeable sounding, polite brit/indie rock band .
Spring a LeakSpring a Leak by The Lucksmiths
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $13.23
probably the best melbourne-based twee-ish indie rock band i can name. sure most of the tracks on here are b-sides, early recordings, or covers, but it is seriously like forty-five songs spanning the length of the bands career. and its still got all the charm and subtle/clever wit of your favourite smiths and belle & sebastian albums.
ContactContact by Thirteen Senses
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.92
slightly stronger than their debut album, 'the invitation' and the band in general sound as coldplay mightve if they were permitted to continually inhabit 1999-2000. massive.
Easy TigerEasy Tiger by Ryan Adams
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.99
may nothing ever top 'cold roses', but this is probably his best release since then. and it is ryan adams. outstanding alt-country rock, save for the nearly intolerable 'halloween head', which makes you wonder what he was thinking. but i guess thats what happens when youre sober (being allowed one dud).
Follow The LightsFollow The Lights by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $2.09
an ep? sure, i mean it is ryan adams (o, and dont forget the cardinals). tracks like 'follow the lights', 'my love for you is real' and the acoustic of the ever-exceptional 'if i am a stranger' make this seven-songer better than lps of many bands.
Ga Ga Ga Ga GaGa Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.00
easily their over-all best effort since 'girls can tell' (they really can though), with the one exception of the one track 'two sides/monsieur valentine' off 'gimme fiction' which could quite possibly have been done eleven different ways to constitute an entire record in itself.
Fort NightlyFort Nightly by White Rabbits
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.97
it may be somewhat unfair, but ive secretly labeled this band 'spoon jr'. the first few tracks will explain why, but, really, they are that good.
These Things Move in ThreesThese Things Move in Threes by Mumm-Ra
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $6.74
as great an album as their infamous 'thunder cats' fiend name would/would not suggest. its primarily somewhat fast-paced brit/indie rock and with tracks like 'now or never', 'out of the question', 'shes got you high' and 'starlight' (not to be confused with the equally awesome muse track of 06) it makes for a pleasing listening.
Casino Twilight DogsCasino Twilight Dogs by Youth Group
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.43
worth it just for 'sorry' alone. this australian acts second lp may have actually been released outside the u.s. in 06, but nevertheless, it winds up here. sure they cover the eighties anthem 'forever young', but, really who gives a fece, as they do it rather well.
2323 by Blonde Redhead
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.49
brilliantly hauntingly beautiful as reading joyces 'the dead'. noise-pop at its height.
Hvarf/HeimHvarf/Heim by Sigur Rós
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.49
some may be upset this is no epic follow-up to the gorgeous 'takk' (thanks). no kidding, its really not supposed to be. its two disks of re-recorded materials and of live performances. its sigur ros- its splendor will speak for itself.
KurrKurr by Amiina
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.70
the ladies whove been doing live strings for sigur ros all these years now have their own album. its really quite pretty. a must have for anyone who appreciates all things icelandic (except perhaps for stockfish).
Stars on the WallStars on the Wall by The Go Find
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.99
remember the postal service? this is pretty much them/him, but better, and obviously infinitely less popular. 'dictionary' is their 'district sleeps alone tonight'. (but better).
Asleep at Heaven's GateAsleep at Heaven's Gate by Rogue Wave
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.89
easily their best yet. tracks like 'harmonium', 'like i needed', 'chicago x 12', 'lake michigan' and 'cheaper than therapy' have all, at some point, topped the very real music charts in my brain over the past several months.
God Save the ClienteleGod Save the Clientele by The Clientele
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.20
someone relatively famous compared listening to these guys with 'coming down from acid inside a wet cardboard box'. it still pretty much fits the bill, but i suppose the box has grown even more crowded and itchy with the additions of pianist m. drainsy and honorary member (whatever the hell that means) pat sansone of wilco fame. perhaps he was needed for steel guitar tutorials or something.
Leaves in the RiverLeaves in the River by Sea Wolf
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.88
a great debut album. tracks 'leaves in the river', 'youre a wolf' and 'the cold, the dark & the silence' may seem to dominate, but its a solid, quietish indie album throughout. somewhat reminds me of midlakes awesome 06 release 'trials of van occupanther' in an 'ok, lets go shepard some sheep' sort of way. somewhat earthly, i suppose, in other words.
AndorraAndorra by Caribou
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.00
this is their best release to date, though 'milk of human kindness' does come incredibly close. a great bit of sound with some cute little melodies as well. anyone who has ever heard of 'four tet' would enjoy this also. if you see these guys live, and youre ultra-lucky, they may play for you a slide show of cartoon shore birds.
Night Falls Over KortedalaNight Falls Over Kortedala by Jens Lekman
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99
may nothing ever match the sheer beauty of songs like 'julie' and 'black cab' off of 'when i said i wanted to be your dog' and 'oh youre so silent jens', respectively, but the standout this time 'your arms around me' may compete. its arguably his most cohesive yet. have been meaning to see him live for years (well, like three anyways).
Loney, NoirLoney, Noir by Loney Dear
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.47
a quietly lovely album from start to finish. tracks like 'i will call you lover again' are ridiculously charming. you make sweden proud.
VictoriousVictorious by The Perishers
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $4.82
another great of 07 from everyones favourite lutheran-oriented scandinavian nation. it may not fully stand up to their last two, but still clearly wonderful. if you havent heard, think of a more piano-based travis circa 2001 with even more songs of hurt and romantic defeat.
Armchair ApocryphaArmchair Apocrypha by Andrew Bird
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99
first love of 07 campaign. its more focused/condensed than 'mysterious production of eggs'. songs like 'fiery crash', 'imitosis', 'heretics', 'dark matter', 'scythian empires' are absolutely massive.
Because of the TimesBecause of the Times by Kings of Leon
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.49
arguably their best, though i must say that the bottom line is really that they do much resemble x-mas elves in tights when seen live. this one certainly contains the most intricate/intelligent guitar work of all their releases. no matter, these boys have been on a roll since 2002 and show no signs of stopping.
The Boy with No NameThe Boy with No Name by Travis
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.25
clearly their best since 99s 'the man who'. their trademark jangly-guitared, melancholic sound exemplifies itself on tracks like 'closer', 'battleships', 'under the moonlight' and 'colder'. though whether they can compose more simplistic lyrics is yet to be seen.
In RainbowsIn Rainbows by Radiohead
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.39
mostly everyone knows that this album was actually released in early october 07 for like 0.01 american dollars. as many say, this is probably their best 'full band' sounding effort since 97s 'ok comp'. wow, then that means it must be awesome. it is.
Our Earthly PleasuresOur Earthly Pleasures by Maximo Park
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.48
one of the most brilliant of 07. each track on this album would be a severe standout for many other bands. a huge step up from 'a certain trigger'. id compare with an oasis or embrace with much more adrenaline and a more british sound (if the latter is even possible). truly massive.
Hey Venus!Hey Venus! by Super Furry Animals
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $7.38
its a departure from the previous 'love kraft' and more a return to their furrier/fuzzed-out roots of albums like 'guerilla' or 'radiator'. some great music, especially the incredilby catchy 'run-away' (perhaps their most poppy tune yet), despite the horrific album artwork which dreadfully resembles some incredibly creepy circus act gone completely awry.
Friend and FoeFriend and Foe by Menomena
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.24
this album is clearly as great as the infamous 'sesame street' sketch for which the band does/does not take its name. some call them a poor mans radiohead. perhaps, but their sound does stand alone. tracks like 'evil bee', 'wet and rusting' and 'airaid' should be enough to keep the rose city proud (until the blazers make the playoffs again atleast). and worth it for the art work alone.
Ten Years of TearsTen Years of Tears by Arab Strap
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.99
incredible snap-shot of a beautiful career. im so sad theyre retiring. no band has composed such an array of songs devoted to such a variety of themes such as: drinking; making it with a girl; drinking, then making it with a girl; attempting to make it with a girl, failing, and drinking as a result (so familiar, eh). cheers to both your solo projects, lads.
Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen WintersFourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters by The Twilight Sad
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.98
somehow sort of a hybrid of idlewild and arab strap. obviously not yet as stellar as either of the two, but very good and very scottish nonetheless.
WiselyWisely by Wisely
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $0.41
a fairly good, fairly low-key poppish indie album. basically just enjoyable. certainly helps that jenna fischer (so cute) of tvs 'the office' is a huge fan.
EveryoneEveryone
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $13.58
neat. nobody does americana/alt-country better than this british outfit. wilco only wishes 'sky blue sky' turned out as good as this.
Pull the PinPull the Pin by Stereophonics
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $10.81
perhaps their best work. frightening cover, but certainly makes up for it with solid tracks the whole way through. kelly still sounds like rod stewart with adhd, except awesome, and the band do rock-out quite a bit on this one. a great live show, especially as kelly is prone to commenting on the more d-bag/annoying fans in the crowd.
On the LeylineOn the Leyline by Ocean Colour Scene
Buy used from: $23.32
this mancunian(?) blues-based rock band seems to randomly release something special every four years or so. this ones comparable in excellence with 'north atlantic drift'. seems to have a slight harder edge to it, which is fine. 'go to sea' (subliminal message excluded) is an outstanding track. its not the only one.
Five RosesFive Roses by Miracle Fortress
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.75
wow. similar to caribou i suppose. canadian- surely. perhaps what the beach boys might have sounded like if they had developed in the 2000s (and used less/more drugs). outstanding album.
The Stage NamesThe Stage Names by Okkervil River
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.19
will sheff is pretty much a genius. its possibly even better than 'black sheep boy'. if you like, check out his other bands most recent release, 'palo santo' by shearwater.
Scream & Light Up the SkyScream & Light Up the Sky by The Honorary Title
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.80
probably almost emo, but its outstanding nevertheless. a bit comparable to albums by the format. indie-rock with feeling and a slight hint of blues. perhaps more main-stream sounding than their last 'anything else but the truth'.
One Cell In the SeaOne Cell In the Sea by A Fine Frenzy
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.25
alison is somewhat comparable to jenny lewis in terms of vocals (perhaps looks as well?). a completely gorgeous, piano-driven album, and perfect driving music to accompany a trip across michigans northern peninsula. 'minnow and the trout' (sure, i like fishing) is probably the best evolution-themed track ive heard. certainly beats that number done by pearl jam a decade ago.
