![]() | Taking a Chance on Love by Jane Monheit
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.90 My current Gold Standard. With a natural sound that's not over-equalized, over-mixed or over-processed. "Honeysuckle Rose," "I won't dance" (duet with Michael Buble) and "Over the Rainbow" (sung in an almost whisper) get lots of play.
![]() | 'Round Midnight by Linda Ronstadt
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $8.00 This was my gold standard for more than 10 years. It seems that on 90% of today's recordings the decibles are really jacked up, which reduces the dynamic range between the soft/normal passages and piercing highs. Not so here and Ms. Ronstadt's robust vocal range can be properly appreciated. This compilation contains all three Linda Ronstadt - Nelson Riddle albums.

![]() | Dreaming Wide Awake by Lizz Wright
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.66 "A Taste of Honey" - a western tinged song with an easy pace.
![]() | Renee Olstead by Reneé Olstead
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.96 I love her version of "Summertime." I think she was only 17 when this was recorded.
![]() | Shaken by a Low Sound by Crooked Still
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.25 When I want to test the bass response of my system I pull this disc out. Try "Come on in my kitchen"
![]() | Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time by The Notting Hillbillies
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.54 "Your Own Sweet Way." Featuring Mark Knopfler, this song is like floating on a lazy meandering river in the countryside.
![]() | Alison Krauss & Union Station - Live by Alison Krauss & Union Station
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.08 I'm not a big fan of live recordings, but this one is outstanding. Alison has a very sweet angelic voice. The disc I have is a SACD hybrid with dual tracks.
![]() | Girls and Boys by Ingrid Michaelson
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.99 "The Way I Am" - Ingrid's cute (but not annoying) rendition of a short and sweet pop song with clever lyrics.
![]() | We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things by Jason Mraz
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.89 "I'm Yours" is like a sunny hawaiian breeze. The perfect complement to Ingrid Michaelson's "The way I am."
![]() | Alone in IZ World
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.78 How such a large man can do so tender a rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is beyond me. This recording has an emotional and visceral quality that is rarely achieved.
![]() | Unfold (Deluxe Edition with Bonus DVD) by Marié Digby
Buy used from: $15.99 I first read about Marie in the Wall Street Journal of all places. The article concerned her clever marketing technique of doing covers of popular songs and posting them on you-tube. Turns out she's quite a talent and I much prefer her more acoustically themed version of "Umbrella" to Rhiana's overproduced one.
![]() | Inland Territory by Vienna Teng
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.98 "Grandmother Song" is a surprise. Ms. Teng, better known for mellow piano ballads, has produced an original highly spirited song here. The one-take, garage style acoustic recording only adds to the edginess.
![]() | We Are One by Kelly Sweet
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.50 "Je T'Aime" This album does fall into the trap of recording way too loud, reducing dynamics. However, Kelly Sweet has such a beautiful voice I can't resist popping this CD in for a spin from time to time.
![]() | A Good Day by Priscilla Ahn
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.98 While Priscilla Ahn is a decent pop singer ("Dream") this superior recording really shines on the simple "Find My Way Back Home".
![]() | The Healer by John Lee Hooker
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.69 "The Healer." What could be better than fusing the smooth chords of Santana with John Lee Hooker's bluesy rhythms.
![]() | Michael Buble - It's Time by Michael Buble
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $8.49 "Feeling Good." I think he comes closest to evoking Frank Sinatra's spirit.
![]() | Giving Up the Ghost by Jackie Greene
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.99 "I don't live in a dream"
![]() | Frank by Amy Winehouse
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.64 "Stronger than me." Amusing, profanity free lyrics showcase Amy's talent. Enjoy, because who knows how long she'll last with her self-destructive behavior.
![]() | Earthbound by Paul Schwartz Project
Buy used from: $5.80 "Nevermore" - Beautiful new-age/celtic string infused duet.
![]() | Only Trust Your Heart by Diana Krall
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.01 "Is you is or is you ain't" - A high quality cover of Dinah Washington's classic.
![]() | Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.69 "Hey Sweet Man" - A sparse, acoustic, country-bluesy song. This is an HDCD hybrid.
![]() | Doll by Keiko Matsui
Buy used from: $1.41 This new-age/jazz fusion artist recorded this disc in the short-lived "Q-Sound" which psycho-acoustically presented a 3-D soundstage with a standard two speaker stereo system. Check out the opening of "1942, From Russia" you'll swear the cello was playing behind you.
![]() | Poetically Justified by Marcus Johnson
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.85 "Master of My Heart" - This R&B song featuring Maysa gets a lot of play on my system.
![]() | Yael Naïm by Yael Naïm
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.51 I admit I found about this from the iPod commercial. Her vocals, though limited, have character and is clear and up-front on "New Soul". I also like the french horn in the background.
![]() | Siren by Sasha & Shawna
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.89 It's a bit gimicky to stick two classically trained beauties on a hybrid pop album (Think girl group "Bond"). Indeed, for the most part there is no chemistry between the two singers. However, on their cover of Sting's "Fields of Gold" they actually strike gold.
![]() | Rodrigo y Gabriela (with Bonus DVD) by Rodrigo y Gabriela
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.75 Gabriela is like the S.T.O.M.P. of guitar. It's simply amazing the variety of percussive sounds she can coax out of her instrument while maintaining her rather unorthodox strumming style. "Diablo Raja" was named after a rollercoaster, and appropriately so. The bonus DVD has a tutorial that showcases her loco skillz. One negative is that the recording is a bit on the dull side.
![]() | Kill to Get Crimson by Mark Knopfler
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.08 "True Love Will Never Fade." Upbeat classic sounding Knofpler.
![]() | Secrets by Sierra Hull

![]() | Second Season by Kristin Scott Benson

![]() | La Dona by Teena Marie
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.98 "Still in Love" a surprising diva like performance.
![]() | Lisa Stanfield by Lisa Stansfield
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.79 Lisa was a trailblazer in the British soul-pop category that is currently topped by Leona Lewis and Amy Winehouse. "The Real Thing" best represents her unique brand of pop.
![]() | State of Grace III by Various Artists
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.99 "Lux Aeterna" - a relaxing new-age string arrangement.
![]() | Chris Botti in Boston [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $1,120.20 I'm not really a big fan of Chris Botti, but it's worth buying this Blu-ray just for his duet with Lucia Micarelli.
![]() | The Best of Laura Pausini: E Ritorno Da Te by Laura Pausini
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.55 "E ritorno Da Te" - Energetic spanish-pop song.
![]() | Army of Me: Remixes and Covers by Björk
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $2.94 I actually loved Bjork's infamous swan dress, but I've never loved her music. And I still don't. The remix of note here is actually by french group Grisbi.
![]() | Better Off Alone by Alice Deejay
Buy used from: $4.55 Can a club/dance song be audiophile? Probably not, but they certainly can be poorly recorded and mixed. This one passes muster on those counts. Pop this in for a boost of energy.
![]() | Flow by Quiet Force
Buy used from: $8.72 I'm not sure what category this falls in. Perhaps new-age/drum'n'bass. While not perfect, the mix on "Listen to the Music" has some interesting sound effects with the soothing bass rhythm.
![]() | The Drum and Bass Collection by The Art of Noise
Buy used from: $2.12 "Something Always Happens" which is my favorite drum'n'bass song and also happens to be listenable on a hi-fi system.
