![]() | Black, White & Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self by Rebecca Walker
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.33 This is the first time I've read this one all the way through since early '01 and I like it a lot better this time. I'm also Black, White and Jewish and love reading stories of other biracial people.
![]() | James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon by Julie Phillips
Buy new: $13.50 / Used from: $2.30 I didn't read the entire book but this woman's story was intriguing.
![]() | Best Friends by Martha Moody
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.01 This book definitely needed an editor and likeable characters but I reread it anyway. I'm planning on reading her upcoming book as well. The author has "something" and maybe she finds it with her new release.

![]() | How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time by Kara Jesella
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $4.39 I think I only read one or two issues of Sassy (I was a bit too old for their demographic) but enjoyed reading this tribute.
![]() | The Follower by Jason Starr
Buy new: $18.68 / Used from: $2.99 Stalker lit.
![]() | Forever . . . by Judy Blume
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.75 I haven't read this book in around 30 years. It was interesting to revisit this one at nearly 45 years of age.
![]() | Baby Love by Rebecca Walker
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $1.05 I skimmed most of this book but did like the parts with Walker and her father. In Black, White and Jewish, the author seemed to be critical of her Dad but it looks like they have a close relationship today.
![]() | On Chesil Beach: A Novel by Ian McEwan
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $2.13 Sad.
It was interesting to read about two young people right before the advent of Beatlemania in England.
For me, the book was as much about England than about sex (or the lack thereof).
![]() | Upstate: A Novel by Kalisha Buckhanon
Buy new: $10.16 / Used from: $0.01 This book engaged me and I read it quickly. It was interesting to see how Natasha's writing changed as she went to college and law school. In addition, it was important to show the positive role of teachers in both Natasha and Antonio's lives. The educational system often fails the Natashas and Antonios but individual teachers can still make a difference within a dysfunctional system.

![]() | White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son by Tim Wise
Buy new: $12.55 / Used from: $5.75 Lessons on white privilege from someone who feels its effects. Many of us non-white folks already know this. I liked what he said about white people giving up their immigrant past to become a white American.
![]() | The Old Neighborhood by Avery Corman
Buy used from: $0.01 This is a dated book (from almost 30 years ago) but still has some charm. It may be one of the first novels about a double-income upper middle class household.
![]() | Skin I'm In, The by Sharon Flake
Buy used from: $0.83 This book brought me right back to junior high school.
![]() | Animal Farm (Signet Classics) by George Orwell
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.99 Orwell's words still ring true -- now more than ever. I listened to part of the audiotape as well and it was a sadder experience hearing the story than reading it. Poor confused Boxer.
![]() | The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America by Katherine S. Newman
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $8.61 |
![]() | Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

![]() | The Run of His Life : The People versus O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin
Buy used from: $0.72 I started reading this -- and it's a good book -- but I really didn't want to go through the whole OJ trial again.
![]() | Disappearing Acts by Terry McMillan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 |
![]() | The Abstinence Teacher by Tom Perrotta
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $3.44 I loved this book. I've finally found an author who is writing books about MY generation. Those who are at the tail-end of the boomers and the beginning of Gen-X.
![]() | Too Late to Say Goodbye: A True Story of Murder and Betrayal by Ann Rule
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Sad.
![]() | What It Felt Like: Living in the American Century by Henry Allen

![]() | A Hero Ain't Nothin But a Sandwich by Alice Childress
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 I didn't finish this one because it annoyed me. I don't think there was one redeemable character except for (perhaps) the stepfather. I do want to give the book another chance. Maybe in '08.
![]() | Better Than I Know Myself by Virginia DeBerry
Buy new: $11.21 / Used from: $2.75 Good read for a weekend.
![]() | I'd Rather Teach Peace by Colman McCarthy
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $2.95 And I'd rather more people LEARN peace. There need to be more Colman McCarthys out there. I read this one over a series of months and I enjoyed savoring it.
![]() | Leaving Fishers by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 I read this book yesterday (Dec. 21) and LOVED it. Dorry was lonely and her parents were largely absent. The protagonist joined the cult but never really lost herself in the process.
![]() | The Lost Language of Cranes: A Novel by David Leavitt
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $0.91 This is a reread which I enjoyed more this time. Leavitt is of my generation (born in '61). In '08, I want to read more from people who were born during that time. (Finished book 12/24/07).
![]() | Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $15.95 I listened to most of the audiobook and loved it. Obama is an inspiration.
![]() | Velocity by Kristin Mccloy
Buy used from: $0.01 I loved the author's second novel (Some Girls) but for a change decided to re-read her first book instead. Years before, I had considered this novel inferior to Some Girls. This time I was really engrossed by the story. The protagonist Ellie is similar to Some Girls' Claire except that Ellie's obsession is a man, not a woman. (Finished 12/26/07)
![]() | Go Ask Alice by Anonymous
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.09 Eh...I liked this book a lot better as a pre-teen. This book of adolescent ramblings don't have the same effect on my 45 year old self. It was still profoundly sad, though. (Finished 12/26/07)
![]() | One Drop: My Father's Hidden Life--A Story of Race and Family Secrets by Bliss Broyard
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $11.99 Judging from the cover, I'm around the same color or perhaps a shade darker than Anatole Broyard. I consider myself biracial and welcome Bliss Broyard to the world of the mixed. Her book reveals to us that she has a rich heritage on both sides of her family tree. I'd like to think that her dad would be proud of her work (Finished 12/31/07)
![]() | Does Your Mama Know?: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Coming Out Stories by Lisa C., Ed. Moore
Buy used from: $32.00 It was a nice change to read a book of Black lesbian stories (as opposed to people of color having one or two articles in white-dominated lesbian books).
