Greased Lightening
I've been using the older 1 GB version of the Iomega Micro Mini USB Drive for about two years at work, and love the thing to pieces, but for home use it just isn't roomy enough for my needs. So I made a huge mistake and bought a 2 GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro drive which turned out to be unbearably slow, and unreliable to boot, hence a complete waste of money.
Thus, when I discovered about a month ago that the 2 GB Iomega Micro Mini was now available, I ordered it with great eagerness. Sure, it's twice or three times the cost of the SanDisk, but I didn't mind. I was happy the moment I plugged it into a USB 2.0 slot: backing up my document and download directories to the Iomega was a joy. Whereas the SanDisk required an agonizing one second per file, for even the smallest saved text e-mails, the Iomega felt in contrast like an external hard drive. A 10,000-file backup which took almost four hours on the SanDisk took barely half an hour on the Iomega, and that included the time needed for operating my "Beyond Compare" file synchronization utility and skipping between different file groups. No doubt a straight file copy would have gone faster still.
Granted, the Iomega bogged down somewhat on multi-megabyte files, but that's understandable: it is, after all, a flash drive, not a real hard drive.
Other features I liked about the 1 GB model are present in the 2 GB model as well: it is very small, measuring roughly 2 cm by 4 cm by 1 cm. It has detachable, interchangeable swivel cases in three colors: black, light blue and pale green. I preferred the orange, grey and dark blue colors of the 1 GB model better, but no matter. The different colors serve mainly to distinguish otherwise identical flash drives, since there's no real obvious way to write on them. I think I read somewhere that the colors are subject to change at Iomega's discretion.
The drive also comes with a long chain which can be attached to a ring on the swivel case, turning this drive into a high-tech "geek" pendant for ease of transport. It also tends to snag on things in my briefcase, making it easier for me to find it in a hurry. Plus there is a key ring clip. I should caution, though, that reviewers for other versions of the drive have not been happy using the drive as a key fob. I can see why: the case would probably pop off too easily in your pocket, mashing against the keys. It might work in a purse, but I wouldn't know anything about that.
One last feature I like is the bright blue LED which flashes when there is drive activity. The older drive has one too, but it's barely noticeable in a well-lit room. This one, however, is unmistakable.
All in all, the 2 GB Iomega Micro Mini USB Drive was well worth the extra money. My only regret is that I didn't get one months ago.
