The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin (Dover Thrift Editions)The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin (Dover Thrift Editions) by Benjamin Franklin
Buy new: $2.50 / Used from: $0.01
This book will help you understand the value of good character. Plus it is well written and probably the basis of the American obsession with self help books. Why not read the original?
To Kill a Mockingbird (slipcased edition)To Kill a Mockingbird (slipcased edition) by Harper Lee
Buy new: $25.20 / Used from: $13.90
A very readable and enjoyable book about a very important time in American history. This book is devoid of most of the self-consciousness that plague many fiction books about civil rights. Plus this book is considered a classic by many and will widen your connectivity to American culture. If you enjoy the book check out the movie by the same name (the black and white version).
Gulliver's Travels (Penguin Classics)Gulliver's Travels (Penguin Classics) by Jonathan Swift
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $2.40
This classic needs to be read for its humor and because it is referenced so often in our culture (Yahoo is an example). I include it as an early and fun example of parody and satire.
War and Peace (Vintage Classics)War and Peace (Vintage Classics) by Leo Tolstoy
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $11.47
I include this somewhat difficult book because I truly enjoyed it and it is an example of excellent writing. It is written in an older style so you have to give the author more time to develop his theme. It will take longer to get into the story than with a modern novel. Give it time and you will be greatly rewarded.
David Copperfield (Penguin Classics)David Copperfield (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $2.50
Charles Dickens is a master of the genre he invented. I think this is his best work. It is also highly referenced so being familiar with it will give you a cultural advantage.
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's CourtA Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.24
You probably have already read Tom Sawyer and Huckkleberry Finn so I won't recommend those books. This book is another great example of Twain's style and a good reminder of why he was so widely regarded. It is also a good example of a type of early science fiction and has been widely imitated. Again, it's good to go to the original source.
Brave New WorldBrave New World by Aldous Huxley
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.35
This is a widely regarded dystopian novel and Huxley is a great writer. This may not be his best book (I liked After Many a Summer Dies the Swan better) but this book incorporates his most original ideas.
Peter Pan (100th Anniversary Edition)Peter Pan (100th Anniversary Edition) by J. M. Barrie
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $11.50
This children's classic is very readable. It is widely referenced and is a short read so you get a lot of cultural insight for a small investment.
A Christmas CarolA Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $4.99
This book warrants reading (even though I already have a Dickens novel on this list) because it is so unlike his other books and is so widely referenced. Many people have copied his idea but rarely as well as the original. An undisputed classic.
A Soldier of the Great WarA Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.56
I consider this extremely well written book a modern classic. It is devoid of the modern author's eagerness to vandalize their work with vulgarity yet the author creates an entirely authentic modern world. It is epic yet intimate, philosophical yet accessible, serious and humorous at different moments.
WaldenWalden by Henry David Thoreau
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $4.86
A good example of early American philosophy and the precursor to an entire genre of similar books. A bit verbose for modern tastes but persevere, give your ear a chance to attune to older writing cadences, and you will be rewarded.
Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated CultureGeneration X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture by Douglas Coupland
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.01
This book not only is very enjoyable but Coupland has an original voice and his style epitomizes a type of new writing, a more accessible, conversational style that is good to at least sample. This book still manages to embrace a lot of ideas while being extremely accessible to the average reader.
The Elements of Style (Original Edition)The Elements of Style (Original Edition) by William Strunk
Buy new: $2.99 / Used from: $27.59
We live in the communication revolution. To succeed means to communicate well. This book will help you do that and will be a lot more fun than your Junior High English teacher.
Psycho-Cybernetics, A New Way to Get More Living Out of LifePsycho-Cybernetics, A New Way to Get More Living Out of Life by Maxwell Maltz
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.89
Self-help books are an American innovation and to be culturally rounded you need to be familiar with at least a few of them. This book is one of the best examples of its genre, and is one of the most interesting and helpful.
The Constitution of the United States of America, with the Bill of Rights and all of the Amendments; The Declaration of Independence; and the Articles of ConfederationThe Constitution of the United States of America, with the Bill of Rights and all of the Amendments; The Declaration of Independence; and the Articles of Confederation by THOMAS SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION, JEFFERSON
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $3.56
The most important book to read regarding America. Forget what your fifth grade social studies teacher taught you and read it as if for the first time. Truly amazing. If read with a book like The Federalist Papers it will change your political orientation. Since there is so much nonsense written about the constitution always go to original sources.
Moby-Dick: or, The Whale(Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)Moby-Dick: or, The Whale(Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Herman Melville
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.98
I genuinely liked this book that is regarded by many as tedious and pretentious. I enjoyed the austere writing and rich metaphor. Get the edition illustrated by Rockwell Kent for an added bonus.
SiddharthaSiddhartha by Hermann Hesse
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $0.01
Although not Hesse's best book this is highly readable and will give insight into a type of book that became popular during the sixties. His books represents a type of writing that is paradoxically critical of western thought while using the tools of western thinking. Read this book to get a quick and enjoyable example of this genre.
Fatu-Hiva Back To NatureFatu-Hiva Back To Nature by Thor Heyerdahl
Buy used from: $0.95
Another prototypical book that is well written and a quick read. Inspired a slew of imitations in the non-fiction, adventure category.
The Odyssey (Penguin Classics)The Odyssey (Penguin Classics) by Homer
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $2.99
This widely referenced book is required reading if only so you will connect with our wider culture. Watch "Brother, Where Art Thou?" after reading this and you will see what I mean.
Lenin in ZürichLenin in Zürich by Aleksandr Isaevich Solzhenitsyn
Buy used from: $2.26
Scientific Socialism was the 20th centuries worst experiment and Solzhenitsyn was one of its best chroniclers. This book is a quick read and will give you a glimpse of the intellectual basis of communism and the continuing infatuation by current intellectuals.
Don QuixoteDon Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $3.46
This book is a lot of fun and regarded by many as the prototypical great novel. There are a lot of conventions here that were borrowed by later authors and it is good to read the original inspiration. I thought this translation was very readable.
Sherlock Holmes : The Complete Novels and Stories (Bantam Classic) Volume ISherlock Holmes : The Complete Novels and Stories (Bantam Classic) Volume I by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.94
This detective is the most imitated and the genre one of the most popular. Doyle was hugely imaginative and wrote in a very readable style. His influence can be seen in works too numerous to mention. Read the original and if you enjoy that be sure to check out BBC's dramatized version starring Jeremy Brett.
Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Wordsworth Special Editions) (Wordsworth Royals Series)Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Wordsworth Special Editions) (Wordsworth Royals Series) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.95
Lastly, but not least, all well educated people need to read at least some of Shakespeare's plays. His genius is unexplainable and his influence on English speaking culture is massive. If you want to see Shakespeare's work dramatized Kenneth Branagh's "Much Ado About Nothing" is a great introduction.
