For Prayer and Contemplation
These original, contemporary narratives and poems are organized into 14 stations, which the author describes as "movements toward conversion as it pertains to the lives of Francis and Clare." The first station takes us to the Cathedral of San Rufino where Clare and Francis were baptized. Pearce provides a brief summary of each child's background and describes Francis' experiences as a knight and the imprisonment that led him "to ponder the essential teachings of Christ and the ethos of materialism and worldly success." The body of the chapter consists of prose and poetry contributed by Franciscans from around the world. In this chapter the personal meditations center on the significance of Assisi to each writer. Pearce closes the chapter with suggestions for reflection and further reading. Here the reflection involves renewing baptismal promises and meditating on a significant memory, person, or place.
Each of the remaining 13 stations follows the same format, resulting in a satisfying mix of biographical information and inspiring prayers, stories, and poems. Individuals and faith sharing groups would find Pearce's work a useful resource for prayer and contemplation.
