Sandman Presents, The: The FuriesSandman Presents, The: The Furies by Mike Carey
Buy new: $14.00 / Used from: $7.12
One of my favorite graphic novels. Mike Carey is an amazing writer, and conveys a remarkable amount of emotion through calculated silences.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 1910The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 1910 by Alan Moore
Buy new: $9.91 / Used from: $8.00
Overall I'm not a fan of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but certain panels from this book are permanently burned into my brain. Most of the book is written as a creepy pirate ballad, with a particularly memorable scene concluding: "Kill 'em slow." Awesome.
ShortcomingsShortcomings by Adrian Tomine
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $9.03
I read this book while hiding in a coffee shop from 100 degree heat, and I'm glad I did. The narrator is a jerk, but a hilarious jerk.
WatchmenWatchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $4.95
Don't watch the movie. Read this book.
The Invisibles Vol. 1: Say You Want a RevolutionThe Invisibles Vol. 1: Say You Want a Revolution by Grant Morrison
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $7.99
This whole series made my brain erupt and leak out of my ear.
Unwritten Vol. 1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus IdentityUnwritten Vol. 1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity by Mike Carey
Buy new: $9.99
Mike Carey explores the line between reality and story-land by deciding it doesn't really exist. I've had the same suspicion for years. Now I'm paranoid.
Lucifer Vol. 1: Devil in the GatewayLucifer Vol. 1: Devil in the Gateway by Mike Carey
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $6.00
It's a lot easier to think of Lucifer as some grumpy bum with a pitchfork than it is to think of him as a charismatic and intelligent manipulator. One is easy to ignore - the other might fool you. Mike Carey will freak you out.
The Long Way Home (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Vol. 1)The Long Way Home (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Vol. 1) by Joss Whedon
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $5.10
To this day I'm still not sure I agree with the decision to continue Buffy beyond her death in Season 5. But when Brian K. Vaughn crafts a storyline for Faith, things get more interesting.
Box Office PoisonBox Office Poison by Alex Robinson
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $5.00
My sister works in a bookstore. She tells these same stories of horrific customers. This book cracks me up.
Northlanders Vol. 1: Sven The ReturnedNorthlanders Vol. 1: Sven The Returned by Brian Wood
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.00
I love that each collection is an entire story of some crazy viking action. If you can't get used to vikings talking like the LAPD, this might get on your nerves.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #8: No Future For You Part Three (Variant Cover, Dark Horse Comics)Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #8: No Future For You Part Three (Variant Cover, Dark Horse Comics) by Brian K. Vaughn
Buy used from: $3.00
See previous Buffy comments.
Logan #2 (of 3) (Wolverine) Regular Color EditionLogan #2 (of 3) (Wolverine) Regular Color Edition by Brian K. Vaughn
For some reason I like when Brian K. Vaughn dips into established series.
Fun Home: A Family TragicomicFun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.00
this book endeared itself to me when Bechdel explored the complexities of feeling the urge to laugh at a funeral - without it sounding trite. Of all the nonfiction comics to emerge in the past five years, this is the best.
Scalped Vol. 1: Indian CountryScalped Vol. 1: Indian Country by Jason Aaron
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.47
I didn't stick with this series, but the first book read like how I've always wanted cop shows to be.
100 Bullets Vol. 1: First Shot, Last Call100 Bullets Vol. 1: First Shot, Last Call by Brian Azzarello
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.57
the premise is creepy. And works.
JokerJoker by Brian Azzarello
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $9.94
This book freaked me out it was so good. there's a lot of craziness happening in Batman, but this made my eyes pop.
The Complete PersepolisThe Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $10.00
If you ever get a chance to see Marjane Satrapi speak - take it! She's hilarious, and draws simply but effectively and tells a wicked hilarious story that turns standard American impressions of Iranian life on its head.
EmbroideriesEmbroideries by Marjane Satrapi
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $3.80
The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1) by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $11.05
this is the only graphic novel, to this day, to win the Pulitzer Prize. There's a reason it took ten years to complete: it's perfect.
