From Booklist
Health writer Leviton believes that the human brain is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets. And he disagrees with the commonly held notion that cognitive abilities must decrease with age. To "age-proof your brain," Leviton recommends a pragmatic seven-step program that incorporates an understanding of your brain's rhythms with an awareness of how important diet, exercise, and music are to the thought process. Numerous mental calisthenics are presented to promote "alertness, concentration, perceptual speed, learning, memory, problem solving, and creativity." The nature of intelligence and how it is measured are also discussed at length. Though designed with baby boomers in mind, its positive, practical advice makes it equally valuable for high-school or college audiences. Brian McCombie

Customer Reviews

do everything except the spinning and twirling!5
My only purpose for purchasing this book was the obvious one, to become more intelligent. However, the author presents a holistic approach which has improved all aspects of my living. I eat better since I now know the importance diet has on the brain. I also do weird things which the author recommends, like boil water with my gold rings in it and then drink the water. The only thing that I don't recommend doing is the spinning. It's supposed to give your brain a "bath." I get too sick and don't think it's worth doing even to make you smarter.

This book is a great overview of Brain Power5
Leviton has written a wonderful book on the brain. He gives lots of exercises, nutritional hints, and resources. This is a book you should keep next to you at all times and constantly work with it. I used to get lots of headaches until I read this book. In it Leviton gave questionaires to help determine why I was having headaches. It turns out my brain was not recieving the proper nutrition. I no longer get headaches, it's great

A good survey of brain enhancement themes5
I found this work to be a very comprehensive survey of many current themes in mind/brain development. He gives many practical suggestions so that these can be explored. The most valuable use of the book is, I think, to do the explorations and then to follow up using the references which are provided for each chapter. In general I liked the book's point of view, and enjoyed it most when Leviton let himself comment more fully on the subjects he was surveying. I write this review because I actually do almost all the stuff he writes about - nootropics, mind machines, pranayama, chi gung, sound therapy, brain gym, etc. It has made my life delightful! It was pleasant finding an author who had made the same connections
