![]() | The Crucible
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.92 The play is better (mostly because of the ending) but this is still a very good film. Accurate right down to the rotting teeth. Yech!
![]() | The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.54 A very entertaining action film of the rather boring and stereotyped novel. Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing as Hawkeye and some of the Native American cast are pretty awesome too.
![]() | Roots (Four-Disc 30th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $43.99 / Used from: $18.44 I always found this kind of over-rated but it's still a good miniseries. Geordi from Star Trek is a slave brought to America and it follows the life of his family through the generations.
![]() | Johnny Tremain
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $7.69 I'd avoid this one. The first half is pretty good but the second half is just awful. Being a '50s Disney film they are unable to have any sort of darkness and the characters are shown laughing as they go around shooting down redcoats. Surreally disturbing. And a major character who is supposed to die doesn't ruining the end.
![]() | John Adams (HBO Miniseries)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $14.67 A stunningly realistic portrait of one of the most human of the founding fathers. The attention to accuracy in this miniseries is amazing, and the plot is good too. Follows David McCullough's book.

![]() | 1776 (Restored Director's Cut)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $9.95 The best Revolutionary War musical comedy out there.
![]() | Revolution: Revisited
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $13.64 I think that this movie was intended to be a dark, realistic take on the Revolutionary War but it just came off as a mess. America-bashing is right, and I don't usually have a problem with that, but instead of treating it in a realistic way like John Adams they make it an overblown in-your-face kind of thing. I've heard that the new DVD cut is better though so it might be worth the risk.
![]() | The Crossing
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $11.31 Probably the best Revolutionary War film out there. This is a TV miniseries about Washington crossing the Delaware. It suffers from the usual miniseries problems but it has Jeff Daniels as Washington and a few decent battle scenes.
![]() | Benedict Arnold - A Question of Honor
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $3.48 Another good miniseries. This one suffers rather more for a lack of budget than The Crossing does. A few good fights would have shown more why Arnold was such a hero before his betrayal. Aidan Quinn gives a very good performance as the conflicted patriot.
![]() | The Patriot (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.88 Inaccurate but fun. I think that the first part is near perfect, right up until they start making it a standard revenge flick. I even liked Col. Tavington even though he is just insane as the villain.
![]() | The Alamo (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.54 A rather disjointed film but a good one. They should really of ended at the Alamo instead of showing what happened after. It feels like two separate movies. Still, they're both good ones and Billy Bob Thornton is awesome as Davy Crockett.
![]() | Amistad
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.09 A bunch of New England abolitionists fight to free the slaves on the ship Amistad. Honestly, they seem to be making more of the case than it deserves. The men were ultimately freed because they had been kidnapped from British territory and were therefore illegally enslaved. Still, the contemporaries made it an issue first so Spielberg didn't invent it.
![]() | North and South - The Complete Collection
Buy new: $58.99 / Used from: $39.48 A very long miniseries (or rather a series of miniseries) about the Civil War. A large production for a miniseries. Some of the battle scenes are as good as those in any movie. The makeup is about what you would expect for a 1980s movie. It's hard to buy Patrick Swayze aging 30 years throughout the series.
![]() | Gone with the Wind (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $51.99 / Used from: $49.90 Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.
![]() | Gods & Generals
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.20 Not as good as Gettysburg, this film has many good moments. unfortunately it has too much space between them causing it to run on for far too long. They try too hard to make Stonewall Jackson a heroic good guy. He was not a particularly nice man except to women.
![]() | Gettysburg (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.92 Best movie on the Civil War. Period. If you haven't seen this, buy it. This film is almost perfect.
![]() | Gangs of New York (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.88 Daniel Day-Lewis owns this movie. His Bill the Butcher is terrifying and strangely sympathetic. The Draft Riots are the finale of the film but this movie lacks the feeling of building momentum that it should have. Well worth watching though.
![]() | Glory (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $3.59 Black soldiers fight for respect in the Civil War. Denzel Washington earned a much deserved Oscar for this film. And who doesn't love Morgan Freeman? The music fits perfectly as well. A lot of people really love this movie and I do too but I always felt that it could have been better. On occasion it seems rather superficial.
![]() | The Red Badge of Courage
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $2.50 There is a real irony in having such a brave war hero as Audie Murphy play the coward in this film. To his and the film's credit it works, raising this film to a higher level than expected. Too many '50s films were morally pure so it's nice to see one which actually raises moral questions.
![]() | Ride with the Devil
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.64 A movie about the guerrilla warfare in Missouri during the Civil War. A bit too sanitized to my eyes but it is a fairly dark film nonetheless. Unfortunately, it has rather a serious problem with the story. Characters disappear for no reason and the whole thing feels disjointed. Still, watching Spiderman shoot people is entertaining.
![]() | Dead Birds
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.74 A horror film set during the Civil War. A group of Bank Robbers lead by Elliot from E.T. hole up in a haunted mansion. Occasional good scares in an unusual location make this one worth seeing once.
![]() | Shenandoah
Buy used from: $14.99 Soldiers are fighting on Jimmy Stewart's land. I don't remember much from this film which isn't a good sign when I only watched it a few months ago. Generally, there's nothing fresh here except Jimmy Stewart as the patriarch of a southern family caught in the middle of war.
![]() | Cold Mountain (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $0.94 The Odyssey set in the Civil War. The performances are good but something in this just didn't fit as well as it should. Still, a noble effort.
![]() | Little Women (Collector's Series)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.90 Haven't seen it. Heard it's good.
![]() | Rough Riders
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $2.73 A very good miniseries about the Rough Riders. Tom Berenger IS Teddy Roosevelt. The Battle of San Juan Hill is superbly recreated. To the best of my knowledge this is the only movie to depict the Spanish-American War.
