INTRODUCTION

This is a book of secrets for success from some of Amazon’s top sellers.

They’re some of the brightest entrepreneurs of this still-new century.

They work for themselves, but under the smart, knowledgeable,

somewhat-stern watch of the Internet’s top retailer, Amazon.com.

Some of these successful business owners brought their thriving

businesses with them when they came to Amazon. Others set out

to build e-commerce businesses that might never have existed

without the Amazon platform. They all have fascinating stories to tell

and a wealth of knowledge they have been willing to share with others

who’d like to follow their paths to success. You can be one of them.

We wrote this book to help you get there. Along our journey together,

you’ll learn about people like Kathy Wojtczak of Element Jewelry &

Accessories. She’d been operating a bricks-and-mortar store until

she tested the Amazon waters in 2005. Now, she would never turn back.

You’ll meet experienced e-merchants like Michael Jansma of GemAffair

and Andy Mowery of debnroo. These two Amazon top sellers were hugely

successful eBay PowerSellers first. They saw some changes at eBay that

drove them to look for other, better environments for their businesses. They soon

realized that Amazon fit the bill. You’ll meet Dan Morrill, who never

owned a store before, but set out to build a successful online bookstore

of his own, with Amazon as its cornerstone.

But back to you, our reader. We’ll share with you the advice these

sellers offer and the knowledge base they’ve gained to help make

your trip to a successful e-commerce business faster and more comfortable.

Amazon isn’t quite like its famous competitor, eBay.You can

find books and seminars galore to help you build a life for yourself

using that site. But Amazon hasn’t received much attention of that

kind, and it’s not as easy to immerse yourself in a self-directed

Amazon education. So picking up this book is a great first step. We’ve

not only provided shared advice and “secrets” we’ve gleaned from

these sellers, but we’ve also put those secrets within the context you

need to understand them.We realize that selling on Amazon is new

to many of you, so we’ve helped you find your way around this

neighborhood and explained how it works. We’ve also profiled some

of your most successful new neighbors at the end of each chapter.

They’re a fascinating lot, and we’ve enjoyed telling their stories, convinced

that you will enjoy reading them.

Happily for us all, the sellers who worked with us were all great

teachers, as well as being smart businesspeople. Anyone who’s ever

been to school knows what a huge difference that makes.Your teachers

throughout this book will help you learn by sharing their experiences

and engaging your curiosity. They might even make you

smile. They’ve helped us sprinkle surprises throughout this book,

including these great tidbits:

* Profiles, or real-life Amazon success stories, complete with

pictures

* Savvy advice from experts, such as one of the world’s top

shipping experts, Mark Taylor, and e-commerce marketing

wizard Dale King

* Details needed for moving to other selling venues, such as your

own WebStore

* Quotes and stories from some of Amazon’s most successful

sellers

Perhaps most important, Gary Richardson worked with us to

prepare this book. Gary was Amazon’s number-one seller in his category

for 2007. He helped us keep things fresh and real. Gary was our

sounding board, our teacher, and our cheerleader every step of the

way as we prepared this book for you. We’re excited to share the benefits

of his experience with you as you travel through these pages.

We’re convinced that you will agree with us.You made a great

decision to read this book. Here’s a brief rundown of the chapters

that follow. We’ll guide you all along the way, from sourcing products

for your Amazon business to building a successful presence on the

Web itself.

Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1. Amazon, and You’re Done. You may think you

know all about Amazon because you’ve bought a few things

from the site, but trust us, you’ll be amazed at just how

far-reaching the Amazon empire has become. We’ll describe

that empire briefly, and throw in a little history to add some

context. We devote much of this chapter to Amazon’s

Marketplace—a very good place to start selling on Amazon.

Chapter 2. Which Way Should I Go? It turns out that selling

on Amazon’s Marketplace is not your only option for making

money there. You can also become a Pro Merchant. Seller

Central also fits in here. Additionally, you can sell through your

own Amazon WebStore(s). Amazon gives you plenty of options

for building a business, and while that can seem intimidating at

first, it’s ultimately what you want: choices.

Chapter 3.You Have to Buy It Before You Can Sell It. It

doesn’t matter whether you’ve set up shop on eBay, Amazon, or

Main Street; if you don’t have a steady stream of great products

to sell, you won’t be around very long. Our years of speaking to

new entrepreneurs have shown us that this is the number-one

question all sellers have:Where do I get more products to sell?

This important chapter covers strategies for sourcing products—

from finding inventory on your own shelves, to working directly

with manufacturers, to buying wholesale lots on eBay for resale

on Amazon. (We can tell you from personal experience that

eBay can be a very good source of products for resale on

Amazon.) And guess what? Amazon, too, with its millions of

products, can also be a great source of inventory for you when

you start selling on your own website.

Chapter 4. Creating Great Product Detail Pages. Here

we provide “best practices” advice on describing, classifying,

and, yes, pricing your items. You’ll learn tips for creating

high-performing product detail pages. And here, as in every

chapter, we’ll include success strategies from top Amazon sellers.

Of course, you don’t always have to create your own product

pages if your products are already part of Amazon’s vast catalog.

So we’ll also describe how best to piggyback on pages that

already exist.

Chapter 5. Automating Your Amazon Business. Smart

sellers use software tools, whether they download them from

Amazon or other sources, to help them automate listings, track

The most up-to-the-minute book about Amazon, how it works now and how you can profit by it.5
The most up-to-the-minute book about Amazon, how it works now and how you can profit by it.

Somehow, Brad and Debra Schepp got top Amazon sellers to reveal their secrets and inside tips on how to they succeed on Amazon and have shared those tips in this knowledge packed book.

Amazon, the internet's mall of America.....more like Mall of the World, is the pre-eminent internet sales vehicle on the planet. 65 million people shopped Amazon last year alone. If you are not selling on Amazon you are missing a huge market which is, for many people, the preferred way to buy things online.

Whether you want to learn how to clear out a bookshelf and sell unneeded books or open an Amazon store selling new merchandise, it's all explained in this book.

The Schepps pull back the curtain on Amazon and outline the steps in becoming a coveted "featured merchant." They further explain the importance of getting good customer feedback in the ever-important need to be highly-rated by Amazon customers.

They offer serious insider tips about how to find out what products sell by researching and monitoring Amazon's "movers and shakers" which are the top 100 most popular items in each category on Amazon. Want to see what's hot now? Visit Amazon.com/gp/movers-and-shakers/

The book covers mundane topics such as shipping, best practices, even where to get good deals on supplies. The book compares and contrasts other sales sites where one can sell things, including Craigslist, uBID, Ebay, and Google Products Search.

The Schepps even cover the top ten ezine sites in which to help drive traffic to your Amazon site. The top three are: ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com and webpronews.com.

The bottom line: If you want to do business on Amazon, with Amazon, or are even remotely interested in how Amazon works, then this book is for you. This book would be extremely helpful for authors, publishers inventors and others who want to sell products because it unlocks the full power of Amazon. One should read the book first straight through, highlighting the best tactics, re-read those and then implement the top tactics discussed in the book... that's what I am doing right now. I highly recommend it.

An Excellent Manual For Improving Your Amazon Sales5
As an Advantage Member on Amazon I was very eager to read this book in hopes of improving my own sales on Amazon and perhaps finding a way to sell other items on the site as well. I wasn't expecting to pick up a bandoleer of magic bullets that would transform my own marketing through Amazon, but I was pleased with what I did glean from this guide for better marketing. I'm easy to please in some ways because I was not expecting major revelations and in addition to specific techniques that I could immediately put to work, I was aiming to pick up a lot of additional background information about Amazon. Everyone reading this book will quickly understand that Amazon is growing at a geometric rate and expanding into most fields of product sales.
Much of the book dealt with businesses and web stores that are intended to be much larger than anything the reviewer is interesting in setting up. I was only interested in selling books and some art on Amazon. My goals are modest but I was pleased to find several nuggets that seemed intended just for me. Surprisingly, I found several helpful gems near the end of the book. One of the biggest surprises of the book was the advice by many of the top sellers on Amazon to use other venues to sell their products as well as Amazon. There were several lists of other venues for various products. There was also a plug for starting and learning the ropes to Internet sales through buying and selling on E-Bay. There was even a list of reasons to stay focused on E-Bay and whether it was the right time to add Amazon to the reader's selling venues.
There were many specific recommendations for high quality, inexpensive suppliers for helping web setters. One example was ULINE for most shipping and packing materials. I mention this particular example because I already knew what a great supplier that company is. It's not only one of the least expensive suppliers of shipping supplies, but it's also fast. I've never waited more than two days after placing an on-line order before the supplies arrived by UPS. They are one of those companies that epitomize good supply chain management and delivery.
As a person who is really only barely able to use the Internet and the various Social Sites, blogs, You Tube, etc., I'm always trying to expand my knowledge of what is a whole new universe for a Stone Age Man like myself. This book is written in an easy-to-understand manner with lots of helpful illustrations (most of which seemed to be reproduced too small in my opinion--the books only flaw as far as I am concerned). I solved that problem with a magnifying glass and continued to glean lots of the very helpful advice included in the tome. The book is a motivational as well as a self-help book with lots of individual success stories included throughout it.
By the time I'd finished the 306-page instruction manual, I'd dogged-eared half the pages and marked up almost every page with either my black or red ballpoint pen. This wasn't a book that I was planning to keep in perfect condition. It was the kind of reference book that the reader wants to dog-ear, highlight and mark up wherever the reader felt there was material that he or she wanted to refer to in the future. It's a workman's book. It's the best book of this kind I've read since I learned so much from "Aiming At Amazon" by Aaron Shepard, which is also an excellent volume about writing books designed primarily for sale on Amazon.

One Secret Pays for the Book Many Times Over5
This is a complete guide to selling on Amazom, from books to baubles. There's plenty of information here for newbies, like how to get started and choose categories to sell in. But there are also a lot of details on more advanced topics like setting prices, becoming a pro merchant, and sourcing the best products. The tips and advice here are not readily available on the Internet. In fact, because the authors spoke to so many sellers who share their secrets here for the first time, those tips are NOT on the Internet at all. I don't know what some of these other reviewers such as "Honus Wagner" (baseball great reincarnated?) are thinking when they say this information is on the site.

There's money to be made on Amazon, but it's a tough, competitive marketplace, and you need every advantage you can get to succeed. You need this book!
