Why overpay for a camp towel? This is the same product in a larger size for a cheaper price. Cut it in fourths for a more trail-useful size.

Buy a box of the cheapest quart sized freezer bags you can get. You'll use them for organization, food, trash, holding TP, dry bags, and so much more. They need to be freezer bags, specifically, to hold up to your cooking needs.

Don't listen to folks sending you out with a spork, fork, or knife. All real backpackers/hikers will tell you that all you need is a spoon. If you don't want to spend money on a designer spoon, recycle a disposable plastic spoon from your last fast food meal. Easy, cheap, light.

Can something cheap also be good? Yes! But beware ... a sleeping pad isn't for comfort, but for insulation. If you want comfort, you will have to bring an additional air mattress with you to use in combination with a sleeping pad.

If you pick this sleeping bag, you won't have a horrible bag, but a far better one (which is not listed on Amazon) is the 20 degree down bag from Campmor (dot com). Go there. It costs a bit more, but it is a much, much, much better bag.

Use this to set fire to vaseline-dipped cotton balls. This makes an excellent fire starter. The striker is light weight, can be packed in your cook pot, and works even when wet.

Useful for dry skin on the trail (it happens) and for smearing on cotton balls to make an excellent fire starter. Yay multi-use items.

Use this to light your Caldera Cone alcohol stove. Use this method: dip a stick into the alcohol. Light the end of the stick. That way you won't singe your knuckles. In the summer you won't need a separate lighter if you just bring the SparkLite.

Your base layer/insulation layer should be something akin to Underarmor. Walmart, Target, REI, etc all make knock-off versions for much less than you'd pay for name brand. You'll need leggings and a long sleeved shirt.

Wool makes an excellent insulating layer. It won't pick up hiker stank and it will keep you warm even if it gets wet (can't say that about all fabrics). Plus it is good for a wider temperature range. Don't buy it here, though. Go to Goodwill or a thrift store. It is cheaper there, and is exactly the same stuff.

Cut the bottom of one of these open and use the draw strings to tie it around your waist to create a rain skirt. Use another one to line your pack and yet another to double-bag your down sleeping bag. Stuff with food and hang from a tree as a critter bag. In a pinch, you can turn one of these into a poncho. ... or a ground cloth ... The uses are endless.

Pick up a set of cheap Crocs (or croc knock-offs) to use as camp shoes and water-crossing shoes. They strap easily to the outside of your pack. Placing your hands into the shoes, you can use them as hot-mitts in a pinch.

Bring 50' of this stuff. Use it to hang your food bag so critters cannot get in to it. Use it to create a clothes line so you can dry clothes. You'll find other uses as well.

This is just as good (actually a bit better since it has a clip) as any other head lamp but costs considerably less. Buy this one.
