Fantasy and Horror worth reading
By an Amazon.com customer
The HobbitThe Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
Buy used from: $0.01
The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy was great, but this is J.R.R. Tolkien's true masterpiece.
The Girl in a SwingThe Girl in a Swing by Richards Adams
Buy used from: $3.50
Oddly enough my top horror pick is by the guy who wrote "Watership Down." It starts out as a modern day Jane Austin-ish story where an average lonely guy falls for a mysterious beauty. Slowly, and with masterful delicacy, the author inserts little details here and there... Actually gave me chills.
Children of the NightChildren of the Night by Dan Simmons
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
For me, the best vampire story ever.
Carrion ComfortCarrion Comfort by Dan Simmons
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $9.00
The first Dan Simmons book I read just blew my mind (It's about mind-vampires).
Summer of Night (Aspect Fantasy)Summer of Night (Aspect Fantasy) by Dan Simmons
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.92
Kids fighting the occult.
Daughter of the EmpireDaughter of the Empire by Raymond E. Feist
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Fantasy + Japanese shogun-era politics = hours of blissful reading. Read the entire Empire trilogy!
The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lector)The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lector) by Thomas Harris
Buy used from: $6.60
I can't decide which is better, the book or the movie. If only this occurred more often.
Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7)Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $48.97 / Used from: $50.00
Mega popular for good reason. Fun to read and lovely Brit humor. For me the first two books of the series are best.
Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $5.50 / Used from: $2.24
Vampires going to high school? Talk about teenage angst! A great series that's appropriate for the pre-teen/teen set.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia)The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia) by C.S. Lewis
Buy used from: $1.65
Classic fantasy that's appropriate for children as well as adults.
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) by Rick Riordan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.33
I saw my 10yr old daughter read this, and then read it again, and yet again. I finally read it for myself and it turns out to be quite an entertaining read. Book one of a five part series.
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $15.30 / Used from: $9.75
Mr. Pullman, apparently miffed at the popularity of the Christian based allegory "The Lion,The Witch and the Wardrobe" set out to make an anti-religious one. Perhaps a bit too "subtle" because there were only a couple brief passages in the first two books that caught my attention. While the first two books are enjoyable, the third commits the sin of being boring.
The White Dragon (Dragonriders of Pern Vol 3)The White Dragon (Dragonriders of Pern Vol 3) by Anne McCaffrey
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
It is vol.3, but it is my favorite of the many books about the Dragonriders of Pern.
The Bartimaeus Trilogy Boxed SetThe Bartimaeus Trilogy Boxed Set by Jonathan Stroud
Buy new: $29.70 / Used from: $27.60
I read this around the same time I read the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke. Between them I think this is the better read. Appropriate for pre-teen/teens.
Redwall (Redwall, Book 1)Redwall (Redwall, Book 1) by Brian Jacques
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.31
A pleasant if not freshly original fantasy series with talking forest animals.
Eragon (Inheritance)Eragon (Inheritance) by Christopher Paolini
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.89
If you love dragons, dwarves and quests you'll like this. Not terribly innovative, but a good read.
The Terror: A NovelThe Terror: A Novel by Dan Simmons
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.75
Dan Simmons' range as an author is amazing. This story combines historical fact (British ship attempts to find NW passage) with Inuit supernatural lore.
The Girl Who Loved Tom GordonThe Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Like Stephen King's movies (Stand By Me & Dolores Clairborne - great; Christine & Cujo - ugg), his books are sort of hit and miss for me. My first read was "The Dark Tower I" and I didn't bother with another until this one.
Complete Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the body Thief)Complete Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the body Thief) by Anne Rice
Buy new: $21.09 / Used from: $18.45
Ann Rice made vampires modern and sheik with this series.
Odd ThomasOdd Thomas by Dean Koontz
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $3.44
Dean Koontz is a good, if not great, writer. His character Odd Thomas is his most accomplished.
