This book has it all
I have a few etiquette books on the Victorian Era and I was worried this would be like all the rest. I was worried this one would would skip all the really interesting things and not give me a detailed understanding of what life was like during the Civil War. I was wrong!
This book is a reprint of Martine's Handbook of Etiquette of 1866 and the Art of Conversation of 1864.
This book is packed full of great information. Topics discussed are:
The art of Conversations
General Rules for conversations
On dress
Introductions
Letter of introductions
Dinner parties
Habits at table
Wine at table
Carving
Etiquette of the ball and assembly room
Evening parties
Visiting
Street etiquette
Traveling
Marriage
Domestic etiquette and duties
On general society
If anyone wants to understand the lives of the people during the Civil War I strongly suggest they get this book. This will also help anyone who is interested in writing about the time period. I love this book, but I wish it was in hardcover.
