Still Works
I found this book a good read. The first chapter on how to make good conversation got a bit boring as it was full of generalities, but the rest of it was a very interesting read. Of course, I'm a history major and so like old books, and like old ways of speaking (oh, how pitiful our use of the English language has become!) but I don't think there's anything wrong with the etiquette presented here; it still works. The only problem is that no one else around you bothers to participate. To some degree, some of the rules are conditioned on people around you following the same rules, but for the most part you can be couretous and polite even if no one else around you is.
Hard to read...
This book was written a long time ago, you can tell. It is more of a historical textbook than anything else. Buy it if you have a report to do on etiquette at the turn of the 19th century.
