In-depth, but highly accessible guide to Sony cameras - and photography5
Once again, David Busch has broken away from the pack to provide a comprehensive, yet accessible guide to Sony's entry-level DSLR-A350, A300, and A200 cameras. It's much more thorough than any of the skimpy, "pocket-sized" guides, which are themselves usually nothing more than a rehash of the manual Sony provides (and often inexplicably printed in black and white!) Instead of just repeating the lists of settings, Busch offers advice about what each setting does, and when you should use it. I really like this approach, because it helps readers learn about photography as they master the operation of their cameras.

It's certainly more useful than one of the DVD that are simply canned "demos" for those who think of themselves as "visually oriented." Do you like to learn visually? Check out this book's abundant illustrations of each control, key menu items, and pictures showing the kind of results you get when following the author's advice.

But beyond the clearly presented introduction to the Sony cameras themselves, the author takes you to the next plateau, with chapters that explain how to optimize exposure, choose lenses, and really master techniques like autofocus, slectronic flash, action photography, and close-ups.

I'm always pleased when I receive one of this author's books for review. He really seems to understand the needs of his readers well, and talks to both beginners and more advanced photographers in a friendly, convesational way. I wish all camera guidebooks were this good.

Very useful, explains WHY your camera works5
I'm an experienced photographer, so I first looked upon this book with some skepticism. I assumed it would just be a glorified owner's manual. It really turned out to be more than that. The author explains each of the camera's features, how they work, WHY they work, and some examples of when you would want to use them. The official Sony owner's manual simply tells you how to turn on or off various controls. However, they don't tell you what a particular control does or why you'd want to use it. For example, I was initially puzzled by what the "D-Ranger Optimizer" did. This book answered that--and many more--questions.

The author also does a great job summarizing and explaining how the camera determines white balance, exposure metering, autofocus, etc. Having learned photography on a film SLR, this book provided an excellent primer on how these concepts translate to my new Sony digital SLR.

The book is well-written, logically structured, and well-indexed. I highly recommend it!

Perfect5
I just bought a Sony A300 (its my first SLR camera) after taking over 50 shots with automatic settings provide by the factory I ordered this book, it explain all about the camera and digital photography, its perfect for beginners as I am. It explain the steps and the technical terms being used by digital photography using text and pictures printed in high quality paper and resolution. I'll recommend this guide to friends.
