Amazon.com Product Description
Using MiniDisc (MD) is utterly unlike recording your music on tape, where you can't resequence tracks, trim the start and the end points, fix mistakes, or take out radio commercials without rerecording the entire thing. Editing on tape? Forget it! Unlike tape, MD is nonlinear, and that opens up a whole new world of possibilities. For the first time, MD enables you to move, divide, and combine tracks. A-B Erase lets you delete outtakes and commercials. You can add titles to discs and tracks. And when you're done, you have your own mix.

Personal experience w/Sony MDS-JE520
I was anxious to get a mini disc recorder and this specific model. I had seen ads, seen the product in use at the public radio station in Louisville, KY where I do a show and decided that's for me. I am throughly pleased with mine. It offers so many options. I have at times put cuts from LPs and cassette tapes on a disc to use on the show. Quick location, quick cueing and much better reproduction of sound is a distinct advantage, especially in a DJ role. Aside from the radio use, I have copied some very old tapes I wish to preserve. Tapes that can not be replaced. Interviews gathered over the years with Chet Atkins, Bill Monroe and others. Old programs to keep. I am sure the disc will out last the cassette tapes. The great and useful features of naming the disc, naming each individual cut, single track or complete disc instant erasure, recording timeing (space to go or space used) moving tracts and a host of other useful goodies. I have found mine to be a great asset from both a personal and professional standpoint. I highly recommend this unit.
Good Value for the Price
I find this unit easy to use and is an excellent compliment to my home audio equipment. Digital inputs and output enable easy exchange with my CD players. This unit seems to work fine with the newer 80 minute minidiscs based on my early trials. With the digital output on this unit, it is easy to make a digital CDR copy of your minidisc of a live recording you have made, so long as you also have a digital optical input on your CD recorder. I found the jog dial easy to use after a little practice. I dislike the fact that line sync recording function from a digital source can only be activated using the remote. Would prefer this function to also be available on the main unit since I use it frequently. This is a small complaint for an otherwise very nice unit.
I like it a lot
I bought this in the ever-popular, yet slowly fading MD Bundle set for Christmas. It comes with a portable player too. MiniDisc is great. It's a practical way to record from any audio device. Unfortunately, most people don't have them, therefore they don't have the "trade and borrow" factor as CDs do. (On the up side, there's less worrying about them being stolen) MDs are mainly for personal use though- record on the home unit and take it on the road. I like the fact that you can create your own mixes. Aside from the non-universability standpoint, it's a great product.
