Editorial Reviews

From the Manufacturer
The new Digimax L85 is the world's first digital still camera to feature High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). This revolutionary new feature allows L85 users to share their photos on a high-definition television in their original quality. The eight-mega-pixel L85 also includes a Schneider Kreuznach 7.8-23.44mm lens with 5x optical zoom, as well as a 2.5-inch LCD display (approximately 230K pixels), which provides the photographer with a wider viewing angle and a more vivid viewing display. The stylishly designed camera offers a comfortable grip, ergonomic design, and a sleek black body with silver accents.

For the more advanced photographer looking for additional control, the Digimax L85 provides multiple manual functions at the user's fingertips. The L85 features three kinds of manual exposure adjustment including Aperture Priority, which allows more control of depth; Shutter Priority, which allows better capture of fast motion; and Manual adjustment, which allows users to set the shutter and aperture themselves.

Along with its many manual functions, the Digimax L85 also has Continuous Shooting mode for consecutive shots. This model also includes Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB), allowing users to shoot a series of pictures with slightly different exposures to ensure perfect lighting and Autofocus Bracketing to take several shots which focus on different elements of the frame to ensure that the perfect image is captured.

The L85 provides MPEG-4 video compression which allows recording times that are three-to-four times longer than the standard digital camera. It has the advanced capabilities to capture movie clips in VGA (640 x 480) at 30 frames per second and several unique movie shooting functions, including a movie stabilizer function, continuous video recording, improved in-camera video editing, and the ability to use the 3x optical zoom while recording. Movie stabilizer helps reduce camera shake by automatic detection and correction of lateral and vertical camera vibrations, while continuous video recording allows the shooter to pause and resume video recording at any time and merge multiple video files into one single file. Users can also save a selected part of a movie clip into a new file during playback and capture a still image during video playback.

To accommodate any subject matter, the Digimax L85 also features 11 scene modes including Night Scene, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach and Snow, and Text Recognition. The camera also provides various user-friendly functions such as My Set shot mode, which allows the user to save customized shooting settings. A unique feature, Text Recognition, allows the user to shoot documents such as books, papers, and magazines and then extract text from the image taken using the bundled Digimax Reader text-recognition software. And, the L85 also includes several special effects functions including Color Effect, Highlight, and Photo Frame.

Faster in operational speed than its predecessors, the Digimax L85 boasts a speedier booting time and quicker shot-to-shot speed that reduces down time between pictures. Shooters can take pictures immediately after the power is turned on, and they can just keep snapping. The L85 also features an improved Graphic User Interface (GUI) that ensures faster and smoother menu navigation. Menu settings can be accessed quickly and with ease by using the camera's Move and Set functions. Due to this camera's high-speed capabilities and a display that notifies the user of remaining battery power, users can be assured that with the Digimax L85 they will never miss a beat.

The Digimax L85 is equipped with 32 MB of built-in memory and a voice recording function, and it comes bundled with Samsung's exclusive Digimax Reader software.

It's worth the investment.4
I took this camera with me to Honolulu, Hawaii during my very recent vacation trip there. Since it was my first trip to the island, I wanted to make sure that I took good pictures not only as a memorable token but also to show off to friends. I was amazed on just how crisp and clear the pictures turned out. The colors were so rich and vivid. The video was unbelievable that it captured every moment liked I remember seeing the events live.

The one thing I don't particularly like about this camera is the size which is about the same size as a disposable camera, maybe slightly smaller. But, I learned to live with it very fast.

I am looking forward for my next vacation trip to Buenos Aires in less than 2 weeks. I love to go places I've never been to so I know that I will be using this camera for a very long time. It's really worth my money.

Awesome camera...5
I just bought this and I love it. Great pictures, easy to use, and feels great. The size is a bit larger than some, but the optics are great and that is why. You are getting a 5x optical zoom. To do it right, you need to have a bigger lense and thus a bigger camera body.

Prior to this I had a Lumix I paid 500 for. The Lumix is much bigger than this camera!! About twice the size. You can get a tiny camera with tiny features or you can get a well designed camera that hs almost as small and delivers quality pics and professional features.

The Samsung is easier to use, takes better pictures (although the Lumix does take great pictures) and feels better. In addition, it has many more features, like a very well lit very large viewer display and HDMI interface.

Depends on your requirements3
I bought this camera, tested it out over the weekend. I was coming from a Canon Powershot SD200. I found the camera larger then I would like and was not happy with that. For a point and shoot camera, in my opinion, having it compact is a great advantage. This camera felt bulky and you wouldn't want to toss it in a pocket to travel with.

The quality of the pictures were great, I thought they were highly superior to the Canon's.

The flash was annoying to the people I subjected it too. It did a red light for the red eye removal, then it did a preflash to get the blinks out of the way, then it did a longer flash for the actual picture taking. So in total it took around 2 seconds to take a picture which is way to slow for most point and shoot type actions.

I replaced this camera with the Panasonic Lumix FX01 and am loving this camera. It is very compact and light, and the pictures it takes are great. I have no complaints so far for this camera except that the speed of picture taking is still slightly slower then the Canon SD200.
