Amazon.com Product Description
Store hours upon hours of entertainment in Sony's DAV-DX255 five-disc carousel changer and surround sound receiver. This versatile unit plays DVDs and a variety of older disc formats, such as VCD and SVCD, as well as your favorite music CDs. The advanced AV receiver packs 1000 watts of power into authentic 5.1 surround sound. Five satellite speakers and an six-inch subwoofer deliver the lifelike sound. The system decodes Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and dts.
Calibration Made Easy
Proper set up of a surround sound system can be a bit of a drag. Creating the right sound field in a room often requires a lot of fidgeting with the placement of the system's speakers. Fortunately, DAV-DX255 has an auto calibration feature that customizes the system to your space, not the other way around. To calibrate the system, you simply hold the included microphone in your ideal viewing position, such as the center of your couch, and the system automatically adjusts for speaker placement, distance and delays.
MP3 and JPEG File Playback
The DAV-DX255 plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files.
What's in the Box
Five speakers, subwoofer, AM loop antenna (aerial), FM wire antenna (aerial), speaker cords, video cord, remote control, two AA-size batteries, calibration microphone, footpads, and operating instructions.
Customer Reviews
Good, not Great
Buying home theater systems is a little scary. My last one was a Panasonic which croaked on me a few days after the warantee expired. If I'd read enough reviews, I would have known it was unreliable.
This unit has its share of issue. It takes a long time to start a DVD. You can't change out one DVD while it's playing another. It has an extremely frustrating auto-play feature. I had a damaged disk in tray one that kept rebooting the system. And I couldn't stop and eject the damned disk. It kept trying to play it. If you start up the wrong DVD, you have to wait until the menu to hit stop.
Also - and this may be exclusive to my set -- the bass levels are set way too high. I had to custom adjust the subwoofer down to its minimum level to be able to hear dialogue without blowing out my windows with every loud noise.
I sound like I'm slamming it. But I've given it four stars for a reason. The unit is frustrating but is still working fine after four months. The performance -- picture and sound -- is very very good. The sound auto-calibration feature is sweet and works extremely well.
It's worth the price.
Good sound, picture quality; some design issues
Good sound and component quality.
The auto-calibration worked well and
the radio antennas look flimsy but work well.
Some design issues (why it's not a 5):
1) The radio doesn't work when jpegs are being played back ...
2) Takes a while to start up.
3) changing CDs/DVDs can be a chore as you have to load them
up one at a time. Can't just spin a turn table ...
Dedicated and Reilable System, What more could you want?
This system is another great example of Sony coming to the rescue with a high quality system at an affordable price. This system is available at exceptional prices for the exceptional quality of sound. I have read reviews for a while now. I bought this sytem used and I love it!!!!
I did upgrade my systme not too long ago to an HDMI home theatre system from panasonic. I do not have any complaints about the new system either, but if I didn't have the option for HDMI I would have kept this system as long as it lasted!!!
It is a great compliment to any home theatre setup! Grab one today!
