Perfect for me
This is a terrific 5.1 set of speakers! I'm totally impressed and happy with them. The small, flat form for the front and surround speakers fit my room perfectly as does the stick-style center speaker. The subwoofer is a couple inches larger than I would like, but it still fit the room well. I have a very large family room 24' x 30' x 21' at the cathedral ceiling peak with wood ceilings and a loft. I was worried about the quality of sound in this room. No need to worry! The quality of sound is excellent with these speakers. I think the quality was further enhanced by also buying a Sony receiver that automatically balances the speakers in the room. It took less than 2 minutes to get perfectly balanced audio that sounded terrific over the entire seating area (approximately 10'x 8'). I only wish now that I could get 2 more of the surround speakers to upgrade to a full 7.1 system. I need to check on that and see if they are available.
Great speakers for the money
I was initially concerned about these speakers getting lost in my large room with high cellings. Turns out they fill the room nicely with clear sound. The sub generates good low rumbles and tight punches.
The speakers don't look as "soft" in person as in the pics, they are "hard" plastic, however they do have nice clean lines. I can say these are good speakers for the "average" theater room. Don't look any farther for speakers if you have limited room or budget.
Serious Bang for the Buck
I am a home theater guru. Due to the fact that I have two young children at home, a more conventional tower style speaker system is not practical right now; tower style speakers are more vulnerable to damage and being knocked over (among other things). In redoing my home theater over the past several months, obtaining various pieces along the way, the Sony SA-FT1H flat panel speaker system was found to be the perfect match for my setup. They are fairly compact and slim, yet they manage to produce a fantastic sound. They are easily wall-mountable, which was key for my application (so I could keep them out of harm's way).
The system fills my living room with sound quite nicely. I've got a mid-sized room with typical 8ft. ceilings. The front speakers house a woofer and tweeter for a very well-rounded sound, while the center channel speaker has two woofers and one tweeter to really pump out the vocal tracks. The rear speakers are a basic one-woofer setup and do a good job of producing the surround sound. The self-powered subwoofer is fantastic in producing thick and punchy bass; its slim design is something of an engineering marvel. As far as all-in-one-systems go, you're probably not going to find too many better subs than the one in this package -- at any price point.
One thing about the sub that might annoy some is the auto on/off switch. This is designed to save energy (and life) by powering off the sub when little or no signal is being sent to it. I found it kind of annoying to use the auto switch because you can really hear the sub's power supply click when it turns off and on, so I set mine to be on all the time. Plus even if there's a small amount of signal going to the sub, it's best to have it audible than not -- at least in my opinion.
Speaking of price, this system was purchased from Amazon for an amazingly low cost. I was able to buy this for around $150 total with shipping. This is normally a nearly $500 item. It is probably worth every bit of $300 or $350, but $500 might be a bit of a stretch. At any rate, I'm glad I paid what I did for this set. I imagine this will hold me over for at least four or five years until I can get something a little more "serious" for my setup.
I rated this a 5/5 in a sort of "relative" rating. For something that cost $150, this has more than exceeded my expectations. You simply cannot go wrong with this setup, especially if you're on any sort of budget.
