The newly developed Acoustic Optimizer provides optimum acoustic characteristics by adjusting the sound pressure balance in front of and behind the diaphragm. Sound is more dynamic, yielding clear bass with proper balance at the low-to-mid frequency range. The 11mm neodymium driver delivers a frequency response of 12-24,000Hz. Amazing headphones. My final choice after months of searching!
I bought these last week and cannot bear to take them out of my ears. Why?
The sound! I am absolutely amazed at the sound quality of these little gems. The treble absolutely twinkles with prettiness, mandolins have never sounded so shimmering, it's amazing. And the bass is fantastic, full, warm and punchy without ever being intrusive. It adds the final piece to a wonderful jigsaw. I have been through so many headphones, Shure E4, SE310, SE210, E500, Westone UM2 UE super.fi 5 pro. . . the list goes on. I was never completely satisfied by any of them, and then along came the Denons and my search was over. For a canalphone they are astounding.
They sound beautiful. The midrange is clear, vocals are slightly forward and sound very natural, and the overall tone is beautifully balanced. I've listened to classical, folk, acoustic, flamenco, electronica, rock, and they sound amazing with everything. I use them with a Sony NW-S706 and NW-A8xx and the combination is magic. I don't even need to EQ, and I've always needed to before. The fit is fantastic. They fit like the Sennheiser CX300s, so they don't isolate like the Etymotic or Shure headphones - but despite that, the isolation is still extremely effective and sound leakage is absolutely minimal.
The earphone itself is made from spun aluminium which makes the phones feel nice and solid, plus they look fantastic, and it's so much nicer than plastic housing. The cable is constructed in such a way that it stays tangle free no matter what and microphonics do not exist at all. The earpieces feel almost weightless, and means I can wear them for several hours with no discomfort. They also stay very securely in the ear. With previous headphones, the slightest movement either broke the seal, or wiggled them out of the 'optimum' position for hearing bass. There is no such problem with these. Just make sure you have the right size silicon tip, and push them firmly into the ears, they should feel 'gripped' if you have in them far enough.
If you already know how the Shure SE310 sounds, then imagine it with a hugely-improved bass, improved fit, magical cable and weightless earpieces. The only thing missing is accessories. There are none. Whereas Shure include a carrying case, adaptor, selection of earpieces - Denon give you nothing at all except 3 pairs of silicon tips. As I was fortunate enough to buy a pair of Denons for $125, much less than the 310s - and as the sound quality, comfort and cable is so good, I don't mind living without the accessories. I would recommend buying these as they will really constantly surprise and delight you.
Based on Other Reviews...I Found The Best Too!
Been doing comparison reviews off and on for a couple of months now between V-MODA Vibe Earbuds, Sennheiser CX300, Shure E2c, Bang & Olufsen A8...and even an AKG earbuds that has since gone missing in Amazon's DB. I was about to pull the trigger on the V-Moda first and then the Sennheiser CX300 (last week), but then something told me to look again. Somehow I stumbled on to this Denon pair and read the reviews carefully. I got a feeling that this was the one to get....even though it ($99) was 2x the sale price of the CX300 and there were only 5 reviews at the time compared to the others I mentioned.
Just got it and put it through the paces with all types of music on my iPod. From trance, house, dance, pop, classical, R&B...it played everything to my high expectations. Bass, Mids, Highs are all balanced perfectly. Just read someone complaining about the bass being non-existent. Try playing around with the fitting some more. I also came across this on the first try....I pushed the earbuds in a little more to seal off the ear canal and now it's a Bass house in my ears. It compares very similar to the tight deep bass from my Sony MDR-V700s (over the ear phones).
In the end, this is the best set of earbuds I've ever had. The Denon's soundstage also seems wider than my MDR-V700s too. BIG WOW THERE!
**UPDATE** : I recently bought a pair of Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia In-The-Ear Headphones and compared it to my Denon set. Denon is louder at the same volume setting on the iPod. Denon has a deeper and more rounded-pronounced bass and much more clarity with amazing mid/highs' detail as described by other reviewers here. I have confirmed that the Sony silicone earbud cushions do fit perfectly on the Denon hardware....actually I prefer the Sony silicone cushion for a more 'sealed' fit and are using them now. In addition to those music genres mentioned above, I compared both Sony and Denon using jazz, new-age, rock, and disco music. Again, the Denon performed perfectly on a wide array of music genres and you should get these while they are still on sale.
Great sound... lousy fit.
OK, I'm brand new to the iPod scene. Only just got my 30GB model... and naturally (being an audiophile), just had to splurge on better earphones. I initially got the Bose ($99) pair, but didn't think too much of them. A flat, dull sound. Plus the rubber bits didn't always stay in, despite the alternate sizes.
I reverted to my old over-the-ear Denon headphones just to feel what it was like to hear the kind of full-on sound I wanted. So assuming that Denon also made quality earphones, I got the current, top of the line AH-C700K's.
They definitely offer a full sound. Crisp trebles. Good clarity. I had to fiddle with all the EQ setting on the iPod, but finally got it right with 'R+B' -- it seemed to be the only setting that retained the deep bass and crisp highs.
However, the terminally bad fit lets them down. As their manual says, you need to adjust the earpiece to a certain angle to get the full bass sound. This is ludicrous. I've wasted too much time attempting this... it simply doesn't work. Had the insertion end been 'flared', they may have offered a better fit.
I've had middling success with a near-perfect fit...
There's no case included, though I seriously doubt I'd use it. I don't believe any earphone (regardless of price) will be 'perfect' for everyone. However, these are defintely worth the money on their sound, and should satisfy the most finicky of music lovers.
