Reliability, Versatility, Expandability

Sony has aligned the DAV-HDX500 sound system to be compatible with their popular BRAVIA widescreen TV line. Yet, it will still deliver fine performance with most other HDTV sets on the market. As a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Theater Sync to go beyond simple audio and video transmission. When combined with a select number of BRAVIA televisions and other Sony audio and video products, in addition to audio and video transmission, control functions will be transmitted via the HDMI cable. With "One Touch Play", operations that took several steps have been reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the audio and/or the video component(s) turn on then the BRAVIA television turn on and switch to the correct video input. HDMI reads the data on a standard DVD at 480P and maximizes the video resolution to best fit your HDMI-compatible TV at up to 720p or 1080i. Plus a world of digital radio is at your fingertips: just connect the optional Connect-and-Play antenna, sign up for XM service (subscription rate required), and enjoy the unprecedented choices of satellite radio.

New to Sony receivers is the inclusion of the Digital Media Port (DMP), which adds even more connectivity to your BRAVIA home theater. The DMP allows you to play music from a PC client device, Bluetooth receiver, audio docking station, Network Walkman(R) or iPod digital music player.

Customer Reviews

Pleased as Punch5
One caveat on this review: I'm neither an audiophile nor an expert on home theater systems.

I purchased the Sony Bravia DVD Home Theater System commensurate with selection of a Samsung LN-S4695D 46-inch LCD television. After setting up the television, I opened the Sony box, noting the contents were carefully packed. The instructions were straight-forward, though mostly unnecessary, even for me. From start to finish, assembly of the front speaker stands and setup required about 40 minutes. I've recently installed a laminate floor, purposely holding off on quarter-round so I might conceal speaker cables. This was a good decision, and I was pleased to find supplied cabling for the rear speakers was adequate for my large room.

As I suggested at the onset, I'm a novice with home theater systems; notwithstanding, after consulting the Samsung manual, I had the system up and running within five minutes. Proper calibration was facilitated by a microphone, which Sony provides for this purpose. The results: I was blown away. My first DVD was Pearl Harbor and the sound was better than my recollection of that in the movie theater--when I closed my eyes, it was like Zeroes and P-40s flying about me. Tremendous!

Today, I connected my iPod via an Apple-made cradle. Again, this installation was easy and intuitive and, though I've heard people say home theater systems are inadequate for enjoying music, I am more than satisfied.

In summary, the Sony Bravia HDS 500 comes well packed, is most attractive, and I'm exceedingly pleased with the ease of configuration and sound quality. I feel comfortable that I made a good purchase decision in the context of price and quality. I should add too that I am ecstatic about the performance of my Samsung TV.

Great combination of design and features5
I have the HDX501 (costco/sams club) which is this model with the wireless speakers and ipod dock.

Sound quality is great. Assembly took 20 mins (keep a screwdriver handy), setup took less than 5 minutes. It auto calibrates the sound based on your speaker setup.

HDMI control (HDCP) works with my Panasonic plasma, which means if I put a DVD into the Sony, the Panansonic TV switches to the HDMI input on the TV to start showing the DVD.

The remote control is great and well designed (compared to other HTIB's).

Simple to operate, great sound.

A long awaited Reward!5
I have spent the last year on and off converting my existing garage to living and office space. The reward for the hard work was to set up a home theatre system. I searched for the past year and picked the Sony systems. My new 40" LCD Bravia with the theatre package is wonderful.

The system is very easy to set up - I had wired my room already for surround sound speakers. Hook up took less than an hour and the speakers are light weight and easily hung from the wall. The set up was so easy and microphone that set up the sound made a big difference in the speaker output.

Only notes on the system - Speakers are lightweight and do not feel that sturdy. Expected a more solid feel. Front speakers are very tall. I fit them hanging from the wall. Again OK, but not as streamlined of look for my room.

We love the sound and feel of our movies. Simply amazing how these systems have improved.

Enjoy!
