LED (Light Emitting Diode) for modern color realization
Samsung's new LED light engine replaces the arc lamp & color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs, and realizes beautiful color. LED will last the life of the TV. Samsung LED DLP TVs eliminate the need to replace the consumable lamps every few years, and thus have less impact on the environment and on one’s wallet. Samsung's LED light engine makes possible an Ultra-Wide Color Gamut that exceeds the NTSC defined color space spec for richer color than you've seen before on TV. Samsung DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than similar sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color whell in the design means they perform with less noise than any previous DLP HDTV design.
10,000:1 contrast ratio![]() Two of the most important factors in overall picture quality contrast and brightness achieve new heights by capturing blacker blacks and crisper whites.
| Samsung DNle - Digital Natural Image engine![]() Samsung exclusive Digital Natural Image engine makes the sharpest and clearest images possible, regardless of the profile of input signals. Five image processors and a six-times density enhancer ensure the best picture from any source. DNle guarantees the truest colors and highest contrast.

Customer Reviews
Well, they did it! A truly fine LED driven HDTV.
Well, they did it! To me, the Samsung HL-T5089S DLP LED driven HDTV is the best under $3500 set of any type. First of all, it is a SLIM DLP - under 13" deep, under 62 pounds with a thin piano-black bezel that's just gorgeous, before you get to the great picture. It has an LED light engine and full 1920 by 1080p resolution. No color wheel, no noise. A projected 20,000 LED life bulb life! They claim a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and I believe it. There are no screen light reflection problems and it is plenty bright. Some reviews of Samsung's first outing into LED, the HL-S5687W, complained about lack of inky blacks, uneven brightness and slow menu response. That's all gone. Blacks are beautiful, and I can't detect any uneven brightness or color gradation. The other complaint was high price. I bought this thru Amazon from Electronic Express and paid $1995 plus delivery of $100 (to my vestibule - not pure white glove service, but at 61 pounds, not a problem). This is the stepped up model. The basic T5087S looks as good, but lacks PIP, Bluetooth (who cares), USB 2.0 (which I might care about in the future) and HDMI 1.3 (which I will care about soon). The HL-T5087S seems to go for about $1900 which is a real bargain. My Dish Network has 32 HD channels + locals! I'm using two HDMI cables from my Satellite receiver and my OPPO upconverting DVD player. I borrowed a Blu-ray for a day, and it was simply fantastic, but I'll wait for a few months to buy hoping for a winner in that dumb battle. The first on screen cue out of the box is a set up choice of "home or store". Store is way too much, but home is close to fine. I backed off a bit on brightness, contrast and green, but otherwise all seems very close. The basic settings are Standard, Movie, and Dynamic. I'm sure Movie is close to correct, but when friends come by, put on Dynamic and blow them away! The menus are complete and simple. The setup is completely intuitive. I'll read the manual one of these days. If there is a negative, it is the sound which is just OK, but no worse than any other in-set unit. But I use my surround sound system and the total result of the whole set-up is staggering. The universal remote is OK with a few lights on critical buttons. I tried the game mode briefly, and there are no delay problems that I can see, and it is 3D HD ready. I haven't tried the PC input yet. I use very few of the picture enhancements, but I'll try them should I get bored with a truly fine HD receiver.
excellent
I purchased this from OneCall along with the Oppo upconverting DVD player. Great experience all around. Very quick to ship, and it was brought right to my door in secure packaging.
The TV does a decent job of displaying non-HD signals. There are around four display modes, 16:9, 4:3, zoom1, zoom2. I prefer to view non-HD signals in 4:3 mode which leaves black bars on the sides of the pictures, although I have watched a movie or two in the zoom1 mode which preserves the correct ratios and displays in the full screen but just chops off a bit of the picture and that really worked well also. Sadly, I don't have HD service yet so I can't comment on HD signals, but that will occur shortly.
I'm still trying to figure out all the features and options, and this set has MANY. From Bluetooth to PIP to 3D abilities to etc, it has a loong list.
Viewing angles can be limited in bright lighting areas. I notice on bright sunny days, it's more difficult to see a good picture unless your maybe <50degrees of center horizontally and maybe <20 degrees vertically. These angles open up considerably when it is darker. We also have it in a very open sunny room for now, but it's destined for a home theater like area which will be darker most of the time.
Overall, I'm very happy with this set. I can't wait to get real HD signal though...
Great value
We owned a four year old Samsung DLP and liked it. I wanted to go flat screen but decided not to due to the high price and small diference in picture (to my eye). I am not disappointed in the least. I purchased this unit for $1699.00 delivered. After a simple installation and easy tweeking I would agree with other reviews....this is one of the very best TV bargains on the market currently. I compared this unit side by side to the other high end products and, yes, there is a difference. But nothing that would convince me to spend another 700.00 to 1200.00 dollars. The picture quality with blu ray is as good as anything I viewed at any price. I have Direct TV and their feed produces a very good to an excellent picture. The only slight failure is the blacks are not produced as dark as I would like them in some cases. This unit is also an extremely attractive addition to our home even when it's off.
