This thing is a waste of money.
This is, of course, a case of getting what one pays for. Good optics and quality equipment is expensive, which this device is not. The optics are so poor that focusing is not to obtain a sharp image, but to reduce the fuzziness to a minimum. Using the eyepiece gives a marginally better image than using the camera, but it still is ridiculously poor. The USB camera is, essentially, a poor-quality webcam. The focus mechanism is so poor the image jumps around when the focus knob is turned. The price and packaging indicate that this is intended for a young audience, and it does not pretend to be laboratory quality. I would recommend against buying this for a young student, because rather then introducing him to the joys of discovery, it will only introduce him to the frustration and disappointment of less-than-poor quality equipment.

Not Worth Purchasing
My 8-year-old is really into science and is ready to learn about scientific discovery of a non-toy nature. This product is nearly impossible to focus, cheaply made, and not what we were looking for. We will be returning it in favor of a higher quality microscope.
