Sony Alpha A700 12.24MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Sony Alpha A700 12.24MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $799.99
The body. By far the best of the Alphas (ignoring A900). Unlike the 200/3XX/5XX it has a depth of field button - I find this critical for macro work, eye-start focusing does't activate unless gripping the camera, MLU, better ergonomics, and, frankly, just a better camera.
Sony VG-C70AM Alpha Vertical GripSony VG-C70AM Alpha Vertical Grip
Buy new: $264.67
The vertical grip for the A700. Easier portrait (vertical) picture taking, double battery life, a nd the grip has all the functions you are used to on the built in camera. This does make the camera very large. I don't notice the additional weight even with two batteries.

One of the better sub-500$ lenses available. Excellent walk-around lens - I'd rather have a constant f2.8 than a longer reach in most cases. I originally obtained a bad copy - sent it Tamron and they repaired it - the lens is sharp and fast. The Sony alternative is the Zeiss 16-80 (excellent, but not 2.8) APS-C

Price to product, probably the best value - especially considering how cheap this one is. Can't afford the G 70-300mm lens? This is the one. I've read that the Sigma 70-300mm APO has less purple fringing (a problem on my copy of this lens) and it is only a little more expensive (for a lens) - of course it is heavier too and I've read that gears sometimes strip on the Sigma. Buy new: $209.00 / Used from: $150.00
I've not used this lens. May be the better option to the Tamron, but it's heavier and a bit more expensive. Buy the APO version, not the cheaper one. In light of reviews, I'd probably buy this one over the Tamron, but either are good choices and most of the negatives with the Tamron won't be noticed in a printed photo. There are reports of gear stripping on this lens. FF

Buy new: $849.00
If you can afford it, the lens is very nice with SSM - as you would expect from a G-class lens. Beware though, the hood is very large and when attached it looks like you're carrying around a small canon. Been thinking about this one alot... FF

I now own this lens - very impressed. It is heavy and silver/platinum (don't let amazon fool you), but it is an awesome piece of glass. I wonder if I would have been better off with a 70-300G and the tamron 200-500 combo, but decided a ones lens solution (despite the weight) was preferable. SSM is completely silent.

The "Bigma". Your one lens solution. Huge range (10x!). Its biggest draw back is its heft. Many will say you can't shoot handheld with it, but an equal number say you can (probably depends on your strength and endurance). I'd suggest a monopod or tripod though just in case.

If the Bigma is too heavy, this is the other top 500mm zoom contender. Reportedly sharper than the Bigma... I've seen drool worthy samples from both.

An awesome macro lens. You can't go wrong with this lens. Probably the more popular choice over the more expensive Sony 100mm. FF
Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR CameraSony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $679.00
A great lens for macro, but I frankly don't see enough quality difference between it and the 90mm Tamron to make it worth it. You can probably find an old Minolta 100mm for cheaper as well - I use an old Minolta, which is fantastic. Note: the Sony has a much better focus ring than the old minolta I use. FF

This is probably the better choice over the Sony 24-105mm with the extra reach. Haven't found enough direct comparisons to be confident. Not a bad walk-around lens; although, if you aren't going full frame, I'd probably just buy the 18-250mm. FF

Monopod. Slightly shorter than the 681B, but fits into a carry on (diagonally). The 681B does not. Makes sure you get a head.

Lowepro Fastpack 350 (Black)Lowepro Fastpack 350 (Black)
Buy new: $112.94 / Used from: $102.99
Nice pack and quick camera access. Straps are easier to control than the Tamron Adventure 9. It's missing the ability to carry a tripod though. Bit of warning, the A700 moves a bit in the bag (plenty of padding though) without a vertical grip being attached - with the grip, a nice fit. The upper compartment is big enough for lunch :) The laptop compartment makes this my flying bag.
Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black)Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black)
Buy new: $74.95
This is my standard bag now. It has a slim profile, but can still fit the 70-400 w/hood. The tripod mount makes things difficult, but still doable. The battery grip on the a700 makes things fit very tight. I also can fit in the 17-50 and 100mm macro. It also has a tri/monopod carrier. The other good option (lowepro) is the Fastpack 200, which has space for lunch and other goodies on the top.
Tamrac 3537077 Express 7 Camera Bag (Khaki)Tamrac 3537077 Express 7 Camera Bag (Khaki)

Good, small bag for a walk around town. With the grip things are cramped. Doesn't look like a camera bag (plus for me). Fits the A700 and three lenses (two medium, one small) easily - not G or the larger constant f/2.8 lenses though (70-200)...

You basically have three choices for an extreme wide zoom (something I want to try): Tamron or Sony 11-18mm, Sigma 10-20mm, and Sigma 12-24mm. Only the last is full frame. Reviews suggest that the Tamron sharper and has fewer distortions than the Sigma. But either are probably excellent choices. There's a new 10-24mm Tamron coming out (eventually)-should be an improvement over this lens. APS-C

Buy new: $859.00
This would probably be my choice of the wide angles (until I can afford the Zeiss 16-35). It's full frame and with the possibility of a cheaper Sony full frame camera on the horizon, this lens is the widest you can go. Gets good reviews. A cheaper version (older and without HSM is also available). If you don't mind staying APS-C, there's the 10-20mm which gives you a couple more mm. FF
Sony 50mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR CameraSony 50mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $369.00
The old minolta 50mm f/1.4 usually sell for $200-250 (and going up) on ebay now. Lens is sharp and fast. Everything you should expect. The 17-50mm Tamron when stopped down can gives me pretty good quality shots at 50mm so I'm not in a hurry on this one, but I don't shoot a lot of low light. FF

Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $425.00
Tamron version of the Sony lens or Sony version of the Tamron - I'm not sure. The ultimate for "walking around". It won't match the quality of a specialty lens, but it is probably the best generalist. The Sony version supposedly focuses faster and it costs more. APS-C

The Sigma version. Has HSM and you can use Sigma's optical stabilization on the lens (vice the SSS on the camera). Reportedly faster and sharper than the Tamron and Sony. Also suffers from some correctable CA.

Competitor to the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 and the Sony. From some example photos I've seen, I don't find the Sony worth the extra money for bump in image quality (IQ). The Sigma has SSM (HSM) vs the Tamron that doesn't, but the Tamron is supposed to have better IQ. May focus better and faster in low light, which is what I want in a constant f/2.8. FF

It's got good reviews. It's cheaper than Sony ($1800). Should be a worthy replacement of the Beercan (minolta 70-210mm f/4) if you don't mind the weight and not having SSM. FF

I'd love to have this lens, but the 17-50 Tamron is doing fine now. From all accounts this lens is fantastic - it is Zeiss. I can see myself buying this lens in a couple years after the 70-400 and maybe playing with a superwide first. Also a Sigma 24-70 that is getting good reviews for half the price. FF

The big difference between this and the A550 is the megapixels, higher frame rate, and better lcd on the A550. Worth $200? Your call. Has some very interesting features I'd like to try and am looking forward to Sony including on the A700 update whenever that happens. Right now I'd be very torn between buying this and the A700 if I was starting new, but I certainly would not trade my A700 for this.

I honestly can't tell you the difference between the A230/A330/A380. If you are new to DSLRs and want a bridge camera these have you in mind - designed to be familiar to your point and shoot. If you plan on being a very casual shooter, but want the advantages of DSLR, they are probably good choices. I think the grips are too small... so try before you buy.

Powerful and well liked and I found it a bit more powerful than Aperture, but I find the interface not very intuitive if you haven't used Photoshop before and the help section is abysmal (though there are significant forums to turn to for help).
Apple Aperture 2.1.1Apple Aperture 2.1.1

I find the workflow far easier to follow than Lightroom. Organization: if you are familiar with how iTunes organizes music (think playlists/smart playlists/filters), it is very similar. The downside is Aperture is a resource hog (works so much better on Snow Leopard than Tiger)
