The D90 is the least expensive Nikon to use their new 12 megapixel sensor with its outstanding ability to take photos in low light without excessive picture noise. It’s not cheap, but it represents an excellent value. Other models to consider include the D60 and D300 depending on your budget.

The single biggest disadvantage of using an SLR (except possibly the cost) is the weight and bulk of the camera and its accessories. While digicam users can use a single belt pouch to hold all they need, SLR shooters need something with a bit more heft. The Slinger is a reasonably small bag that isn’t too heavy but will hold everything you need include several lenses.

Photo sensors are notorious for attracting dust and require a burst of air to clean them. The D90 has a feature to clean the filter, but this will provide an inexpensive and lightweight backup.

The D90 comes with an excellent lens, but for those who yearn for more magnification to shoot sports or wildlife, a longer telephoto is needed. Short of paying another thousand dollars to buy top of the line optics, this is just about the best telephoto lens you can get.

For shooting in low light, a solid but relatively light tripod is essential. This is the only way to keep the camera steady enough for the photo to stay sharp with the slow shutter speeds.

This is another optional piece of equipment depending on how the camera is used. For those who shoot indoors, it can be invaluable. For those who focus on landscapes, it's a complete waste of money.
