![]() | Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.97 If the world were wiped out tomorrow, there is but one film that would have faithfully depicted not only the physical reality of human existence (past-tense), but also its philosophical place.
![]() | The New World
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.24 Without being abstract or avant-garde, this is a dramatically new and better way to tell a story using moving pictures. It is a traditional narrative but a radically patient and environmental art that services the narrative with sensual intuition.
![]() | The Thin Red Line
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.50 A war movie where political war is incidental, this Terrence Malick pinnacle confronts good and evil within nature, never overlooking the existence of God and never turning to combat as a process to entertain.
![]() | The Last Temptation of Christ - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $9.63 This is the consummation of what Martin Scorsese does. He didn't need to make a single film after this, but he did, and he will, and I'm always first in line.
![]() | Dancer in the Dark (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.19 Much less a tragedy of capital punishment than a meditation on the mystical nature of music in nature, and the way that an innocent soul may hear it. Bjork brilliantly channeled the musique-concrete of her endemic composing style into a traditional dramatic context, and Lars von Trier's Dogme 95 process found a lush, romantic elegance in this pinnacle of his style.
![]() | Nixon [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $21.95 When you remove the filmmaker from the film (which is important in an Oliver Stone production), you get a story about a great human leader with greatly human flaws. Robert Richardson reached his pinnacle as a cinematographer in this perfect balance of experimental camera and attentive narrative.
![]() | The Age of Innocence
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.77 If "The Last Temptation of Christ" was the consummation of what Martin Scorsese does, this is the pinnacle of what he can do as a traditional filmmaker. Every component of moviemaking is drawn to perfection here. My doubts are melancholy and earnest that Hollywood may never again create this kind of film on such a large budget and epic scale.
![]() | Chronos [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $9.69 Ron Fricke, who filmed Koyaanisqatsi, largely excepted any philosophical stigma for this opportunity to expand the experimental/environmental film concept to the grandest projection format available (still to this day). Visually, it works as well as the Qatsi trilogy, but substantively, it functions just as an elegant travelogue.
![]() | R. Strauss - Salome
Buy new: $29.98 / Used from: $23.59 The stage director Gotz Friedrich took this opera to film with the artful understanding that it is a totally different medium than performance under the proscenium. It is the early, perfect archetype for how to film an opera.
![]() | Adams - Death of Klinghoffer / Randle, Sylvan, Howard, Maltman, Boutros, Melrose, Bickley, LSO
Buy used from: $27.46 If Friedrich set the archetype for how to film opera with "Salome," Penny Woolcock played against form and went documentary-style to great success, in this context of terrorism which most of us thankfully experience so far in the form of mere broadcast news.
![]() | Bringing Out the Dead
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.49 Who could guess that a movie about ambulance drivers would solely be interested in divining issues of sanctification and grace within the Christian faith? Again, this is what Scorsese was born to do.
![]() | Addiction, The [VHS]
Buy used from: $6.55 If Abel Ferrara's "The Bad Lieutenant" was a streetwise seminary, this is a doctorate in divinity. Tragically overlooked and forgotten, this film consummates Ferrara's obsession with theology (probably owing most to Nicholas St. John's screenplay).
![]() | The Music Man (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.28 The only candy on this list; or to quote Madame Librarian, a "strawberry phosphate" of a movie. Somehow my walls crumble every time I watch this, and by the end I'm tearing up like a baby. Perhaps this is a mythical conglomerate of everything you could imagine is peculiar and great about America.
![]() | Baraka [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $17.94 Where the Qatsi trilogy had a relatively academic agenda, this further development by Ron Fricke of environmental/experimental cinema seems to have appealed most to Birkenstocked patrons of Mother Earth. The film is not the pinnacle of its form (veering dangerously close to New Age sheen), but it goes to beautiful places.
![]() | R. Strauss - Elektra
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $31.25 After "Salome," the second of the two filmed opera masterpieces by Gotz Friedrich, this one added a substantial set design, drenched in rain and mud as no stage production ever could afford. Opera on film perfected.
![]() | The Thin Blue Line
Buy used from: $4.46 Film scholars should competently recognize that this, the greatest of Errol Morris' documentaries, evolved the form. It was audacious (and remains infrequent) to pair an unsensationalized documentary with artful cinematography and music, where nothing less than epic cinema is in mind.
![]() | 2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $8.68 First of all, the optical special effects of this aging movie embarrass all the best-ranked CGI that studios have since pimped out (like the difference between grand opera and gay techno). More to the substance, "2001"'s patient and intelligent sense of wonder at the universe seems sadly extinct from the American psyche.
![]() | The Fog of War - Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.89 Errol Morris' perfected documentary filmmaking style was used to good effect here with amazing restraint, given that the Vietnam-era subject was (and still is) contemporaneous with the conflicts in Iraq.
![]() | The Proposition [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $6.00 Punk rocker/murder balladier Nick Cave sent his characteristic obsessions with Old vs. New Testament, and blood-soaked redemption, straight into this beautifully shot genre Western.
![]() | Puccini - Madame Butterfly / Huang, Troxell
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $10.76 Produced by Martin Scorsese, this French production is laudably competent in its lavish filming of the Puccini opera, respecting the medium of film as a separate art from live production.
