Great in content.... Yet another poor release from Sony/BMG2
Being a huge fan of Soda Stereo, and having attended one of the concerts from last year my expectations were high for this release (opposite to the audio CDs since the recording has been around since last year in the web) While the presentation and the graphic design are great as usual in Soda Stereo releases, once again, the guys from Sony/BMG have failed to deliver.

THE CONCERT

All 28 songs from the set list they performed live are included in Disc 1. While this may sound great in content it leads to several issues I will point below. The lesser known tracks are here (Telekinesis, Vitaminas) as well as the classic hits from the band (Persiana Americana, Signos, La ciudad de la furia, etc)
The DVD does not open as the concert did, with a video showing images of the band at the sound of the cover they made of "Some day, one day" by Queen. The DVD instead opens with the same song but with an accelerated video showing the crew building the stage. The videos from the comedians they showed before the actual concert would have been a nice extra too; these were not included in either of the discs.

1. No Anamorphic Widescreen presentation - In times in which widescreen HDTV sets are almost a standard, Sony/BMG continues their tradition of releasing videos and concerts in a 4:3 presentation. This means that if you have a widescreen TV set you will see two black bars on both right and left sides of the screen. You can try and expand the image using the TV zoom feature so it fits in the whole screen but you don't want to do that after you read number 2 below...
2. Image looks awfully compressed - While they included performances from each of the different concerts in different cities, they included the whole set list as mentioned before. Being the concert an over two-hour show the picture compression rate is so high that the pictures looks pixeled and distorted even in a standard tv set! I watched this in a 50" HDTV set using an upscaler DVD and the result was horrible. I then tried this in a standard 29" and even there the picture look distorted due to the picture compression. Again, all this problem with the picture quality could have been easily solved either by dividing the concert in 2 DVDs (Disc 2 included here could have been sacrificed) of by releasing this in a Bluray (which in case BMG/Sony don't know already, is the new format a lot of people are going for)
3. Bad editing - I am not even going to mention the name of who edited this thing (it is however included in the booklet) Since the idea is to present performances from different places, you'd expect that if the video says a particular song was recorded in say, Mexico, you'd actually see the performance of that song in Mexico. Well, the guys who edited this used scenes from other presentations regardless you are supposed to be watching a particular one. This is more notorious thanks to the circles of light above the band, in a close shot they will be in a position and in the next shot they will be on a different one. Another thing that was very notorious and annoying was that in all the songs performed in Buenos Aires in particular, one of the cameras was placed so near to the speakers (or a structure related to them, not sure really) that it actually shakes at the rhythm of the music, so you have this shaky image that worsens with the problem mentioned in number 2 above.
4. Not a real "live" performance - Like I mentioned before, there is a recording someone made from the HQ console and uploaded to the internet. After comparing that original audio with the one in this DVD, it is obvious it has been edited in a studio to make it sound better. While I may understand the reasons for this decision, I find it a little bit dishonest to sell this as a "live" recording while that is not necessarily true.

THE EXTRAS

There is a cool 1 hour documentary included about the tour with some funny and interesting facts from the band itself.

There are also some performances of songs during the tour with guest artists (like Richard Coleman), highlights of these performances are live versions of "Terapia de amor intensiva" and "Lo que sangra" that were not performed in the concert I attended.

Another thing they included is a documentary called L&L (Leandro y Leo) that I do not intend to give details about. I am a fan of Leo Garcia but I was awfully disappointed with this. It is practically a semi-documentary they made with a handy cam during the tour with Soda. They try to be funny... but they are not.

Bottom-line, I do not think they treated this material with the respect this band deserved, a reunion had been rumored for years and the tour was well received by fans who longed to see Soda performing live again. I do not want to sound picky but I got this with the highest expectations of enjoying it and because of all this, I did just the opposite. If you are a fan you will get this regardless of what anyone can tell you, if you are not, try to skip this...
