Amazon.com Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description The Hitachi P50H401 is a 50-inch plasma HDTV that brings extraordinary value with a unique HD1080 resolution standard.

Outstanding Picture Quality
With a unique 1280 x 1080 resolution, the P50H401 has over 1,000 lines of vertical resolution, allowing it to have a line-for-line match of incoming 1080i TV signals. While it is not the full 1080p resolution, it has a better resolution than 720p panels at a similar price. Picture quality is further enhanced, thanks to ClearWindow technology that reduces the visibility of a grid structure and maximizes brightness and clarity.

The P42H401 has 1080 lines of vertical resolution for a line-for-line match with 1080i TV signals. View larger. View back panel.

Timed swtiching allows picture settings to automatically adjust for changing ambient light conditions.
With the PictureMaster HD IV processor, all video inputs are scaled to match the native resolution of the unit to ensure a detailed picture no matter the source. For a better picture, the processor also performs noise reduction and other picture enhancements, such as dynamic contrast and histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, and the capability for 16-bit color. Users can select between four HD and six SD aspect modes, and three preset color temperatures.

Well Connected
The P50H401 has three HDMI SimplayHD inputs (two rear, one front), the highest quality connection available that has both high definition video and audio in one cable. It also has two component video inputs, one S-Video input, four A/V inputs, and one RF/Antenna input. Outputs include one AV monitor output (fixed audio), one S-Video monitor output, and one optical digital audio output. You can connect the optical digital audio output with your home theater system to obtain surround sound when the built-in 20-watt speaker system isn't quite enough. The TV speaker can then be used as a center speaker.

The HDTV has built-in ATSC/NTSC tuners, both of which are combined into one tuning memory for seamless selection of channels, regardless of format. The unit is also QAM-digital-cable compatible.

Day and Night Differences
The P50H401 allows for three custom settings that match the picture settings with accompanying ambient light conditions so that you get the optimal picture and contrast settings no matter the hour. Additionally, the anti-reflective screen ensures a quality picture by reducing glare and deepening blacks for more contrast and detail. The television also features multiple screen saver and power saving modes for efficiency when not in use.

The P50H401 is backed by a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

From the Manufacturer
Movie buffs, sports fans and those waiting for a large screen high-definition television set with high-end performance that won't break a budget will find Hitachi's new 50-inch plasma HDTV the ideal viewing experience. This model features an all new black industrial design with subtle titanium gray trim, emphasizing the picture and de-emphasizing the frame. The model uses discrete speaker venting below the screen to ensure high quality audio, yet maintain the widescreen appearance for a clean, modern look that compliments any living room. Hitachi's HD1080 50-inch HDTV incorporates breakthrough technology that is the result of extensive research and development and more than 1,300 patents for flat panel technologies. 2007 will mark Hitachi's 51st year of television production. By engineering a new method of energizing pixels on a panel, Hitachi has improved picture quality by increasing the resolution to match the dominant 1080 HDTV broadcast format in the vertical domain. The new TV will feature a total of 1.3 million pixels utilizing a 1280 x 1080 pixel array.

The set also includes Hitachi's fourth generation 1080p PictureMaster IV video processor that analyzes and optimizes the picture with dynamic histogram processing, 16-bit clarity and, new for 2007, MPEG noise reduction--all of which means that the viewer will see a clean and vivid picture. All 2007 flat panel models include three 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs with SimplayHD certification so that consumers can have confidence that they will be able to display the latest digital content with state of the art reliability.

New for 2007, Hitachi includes three picture setting memories and three timers for each input for the ultimate in performance and picture tuning flexibility. Since every set top tuner and disc player is different, and lighting conditions vary from morning to daytime to nighttime, Hitachi offers three discrete picture settings memories for each input. The presets will allow the image to be customized according to source and room lighting conditions and can be customized to change automatically. The picture memories are designated as "day," "day dynamic" and "night."

Hitachi's 50-inch plasma model features HD1080 technology--an excellent match for today's broadcasting standards. The resulting denser pixel structure allows for fine details to be displayed clearly.

Customer Reviews

Doesn't Claim to be 1080P4
If you read the technical specifications, it clearly states that this television is 1080i, not 1080P. This is why we research before we buy.

May not be 'TRUE' 1080p, but GREAT picture.....5
This TV looks so much better than the 720p 50" plasmas for me, it was a no brainer. Most 'true' 1080p plasmas start about $1000 more than this TV, LCD's at 50" cost 5X as much. I really can't tell a difference between this Hitachi and the 'true' 1080p plasmas, if you can, your eyes are better than mine. You can save $400 to $500 by getting a 720p 50" plasma, but you will sacrifice some in resolution. Go compare them side by side, just make sure the inputs at the store are 1080p resolution to show the difference. I am VERY HAPPY with this TV. I bought it for $2000 4/5/07, look around and you can find this price.

Big picture, not so big price5
Just had this delivered two days ago and am totally pleased with the picture and I don't even have the HD
receiver hooked up yet. If you didn't want or expect to get HD, still get this set as the standard def picture is
tremendous. I am not a technophobe nor audiophile so I found it a bit puzzling to get access from dvd, ps2 or
why the picture wouldn't come back on, but a little fumbling and I did finally catch on. Totally my fault. The
sound is good for me, I'm not looking to be launched towards the back wall with monster sound. I saved more than $1,000 from my next choice, so there's still Christmas in this house!
