Blood and Thunder: An Epic of the American WestBlood and Thunder: An Epic of the American West by Hampton Sides
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $1.99
A fascinating history of the settlement of the west, as seen thru the life of mountain man legend Kit Carson. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended to any fan of Deadwood!
The RoadThe Road by Cormac McCarthy
Buy new: $14.58 / Used from: $11.00
I've been a big fan of Cormac McCarthy's for several years, and this did not disappoint. The post-apocalyptic world he paints is bleak even by McCarthy's standards, but is counterbalanced by the portrait of a father and his son doing their best to survive.
Clyde Fans: Book-1 (Bk.1)Clyde Fans: Book-1 (Bk.1) by Seth
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $7.95
I'm a huge fan of Clyde's graphic novels... His spare drawings are beautiful, wistful, and poetic. Not to be missed.
Black HoleBlack Hole by Charles Burns
Buy new: $18.15 / Used from: $6.89
I love Charles Burns' drawing style - very clean, linear, and precise. The story of mutant pothead teenagers in the 1970ies is interesting, and the shifting narrator keeps you on your toes, but ultimately I found myself more interested in the art than the story.
An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories (Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, & True Stories, Volume 1)An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories (Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, & True Stories, Volume 1)
Buy new: $15.66 / Used from: $9.14
If you're looking for a broad collection of contemporary and historic comic artists, this is a great place to start.
Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in IraqFiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq by Thomas E. Ricks
Buy used from: $0.32
Thomas Ricks makes no bones about where he think we went wrong in Iraq, and depending on your view of the war, you'll either love it or hate it. But there's no doubt he's done his research, and I appreciated his painstaking account of exactly how our nation's leaders connived our country into a second invasion of Iraq.
Smoke & Spice: Cooking with Smoke, the Real Way to BarbecueSmoke & Spice: Cooking with Smoke, the Real Way to Barbecue by Cheryl Alters Jamison
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $5.63
Great, simple sauce recipes.

Tales of H.P. LovecraftTales of H.P. Lovecraft by Joyce Carol Oates
Buy used from: $4.55
BlanketsBlankets by Craig Thompson
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $6.00
A beautifully told story about growing up in a fundamentalist Christian household in Wisconsin and falling in love for the first time. Highly recommended.
The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $1.99
Immensely readable history of bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and the key players in the United States who tried, in vain, to bring the threat to national attention. Wright writes equally well about history and people. Not to be missed.
Heyday: A NovelHeyday: A Novel by Kurt Andersen
Buy used from: $0.01
Andersen's book is strongest as a portrait of a young New York City - he nails details like new American slang baffling immigrants right off the boat from England. On the other hand, the main characters and their quest across the continent reminded me of The Last Crossing by Guy Vanderhaeghe. Vanderhaeghe did it better.
Dear Catastrophe Waitress: A NovelDear Catastrophe Waitress: A Novel by Brendan Halpin
Buy new: $13.95 / Used from: $0.10
Very enjoyable novel by Halpin about a geeky teacher and a hot waitress who share two things in common: they both have a knack for making poor choices, and they've both had a less-than-flattering hit single written about them. Modern fairy tale for the 21st century.
Pride of BaghdadPride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.26
An unorthodox and tragic portrait of the US invasion of Iraq.
Maximum BobMaximum Bob by Elmore Leonard
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $0.01
I picked this up after confusing Elmore Leonard with Carl Hiaasen, and enjoyed it immensely. Snappy dialogue, whipcrack pacing, memorable characters...what's not to like?
SuttreeSuttree by Cormac McCarthy
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $5.89
Not my favorite Cormac McCarthy novel, but I'm glad I read it. The story meanders and never really arcs in a satisfying way, but the characters are crisply drawn and unforgettable. I have a bit less patience for the poetic descriptions now that I've seen McCarthy's lean style in effect (The Road, No Country).
Nature GirlNature Girl by Carl Hiaasen
Buy new: $11.89 / Used from: $0.01
A fun read.
Strip TeaseStrip Tease by Carl Hiaasen
Buy new: $11.89 / Used from: $0.01
Another solid from Hiaasen.
Schulz and Peanuts: A BiographySchulz and Peanuts: A Biography by David Michaelis
Buy new: $26.56 / Used from: $0.73
Fascinating. You won't read Peanuts the same way again.
