This enlightening and taboo-breaking film explores the secret underground world of male sex workers in India. Three young men share stories about their lives in the Mumbai (Bombay) sex trade. Married tailor Imran's family know nothing about his career as a part-time prostitute; Shakeel, a bisexual village migrant, works as an extra in Bollywood; and Vicky is a proudly effeminate dancer who enjoys performing as a woman in traditional tamasha performance. Few other documentaries have succeeded in getting such significant access into the different strands of home and family life along with the more predictable business side. A brave piece of film making from a country that still criminalises any 'alternative' sexual practice. (As reviewed by BFI's London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival 2007)

This is an excellent film - well researched, revealing and highly entertaining. Even if this is a subject matter you have never considered, this film will pull you in and leave you with much to think about. I look forward to more from the director!

I don't think that many of us give thought to the male sex trade in India so "Happy Hookers (Solaris Pictures) may be a revelation for you. The film takes you into the underground of male sex workers in India and it is enlightening.
The film looks at three men in Bombay who tells is about their professions as male prostitutes. Imran is a married tailor and he works as a past time hustler and of course his family has no idea. Vicky performs as a woman and plies her trade in the same way. Then there is Shakeel, an extra in Bollywood films . He is a bisexual from a village. The film not only looks at the three men but at their home lives and their relationships with their families as well as the "professional" side of their lives. What makes this film even more surprising is that India any sexual activity aside from heterosexual is a crime and punishable by law.
The research that went into the film is amazing and aside from being informative, "Happy Hookers" is entertaining. The director pulls the viewer in with the first frame of film and keeps him interested throughout.
