The story, spanning over 10,000 years, gives you a combination of metaphysical philosophy and epic space opera. The gameplay involves platformer elements and a combat system with button combinations similar to fighting games. There are two separate ability systems which can be developed differently based on how you play. The music is possibly the best ever in a game. This game is perfect.

I view FFVII as a second-rate version of Xenogears. It tells the same type of epic sci-fi story with the same mystical undertones. It even uses many of the same psychological themes. Being a Final Fantasy game, it naturally has an amazing ability system, in this case being the Materia system.

Tomba is one of the most underrated games of all time. It is the only 2D game on this list, but it does have elements of 3D since you can jump into the background of any level. It mixes platformer, adventure and RPG elements. It's one of the most beautiful looking games ever. It's pure fun.

PE is a rare combination of sci-fi and horror for the RPG genre. It's an intellectual and moving story with unique gameplay.
