XenogearsXenogears
Buy new: $199.99 / Used from: $42.49
The story, spanning over 10,000 years, gives you a combination of metaphysical philosophy and epic space opera. The gameplay involves platformer elements and a combat system with button combinations similar to fighting games. There are two separate ability systems which can be developed differently based on how you play. The music is possibly the best ever in a game. This game is perfect.
Final Fantasy IXFinal Fantasy IX
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.87
FFIX is a classic RPG thrown into the modern era. The story, characters, music, and overall style of this game return to the roots of the series, except they're deeper. Vivi the black mage is one of the most beloved characters in the history of gaming.
Final Fantasy VIIFinal Fantasy VII
Buy used from: $40.00
I view FFVII as a second-rate version of Xenogears. It tells the same type of epic sci-fi story with the same mystical undertones. It even uses many of the same psychological themes. Being a Final Fantasy game, it naturally has an amazing ability system, in this case being the Materia system.
Metal Gear SolidMetal Gear Solid
Buy new: $99.49 / Used from: $6.98
This is arguably the greatest action game of all time. It invented its own subgenre, which is written across the top of the title: tactical espionage action. Once you play this game, everything else in the genre feels like a generic action game. MGS blew away the boundaries of its genre, providing deep and interesting characters with a highly thematic plot.
Castlevania: Symphony of the NightCastlevania: Symphony of the Night
Buy used from: $34.95
The best of the Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night is often considered the greatest 2D action game of all time.
Dragon Warrior VIIDragon Warrior VII
Buy new: $150.00 / Used from: $38.50
This was the first Dragon Quest game to be released in North America since Dragon Warrior IV for Super Nintendo. Although it introduces some 3D elements into the gameplay, it mainly sticks to the roots of the classic 2D games. The class system is deep. There is so much content here.
Chrono CrossChrono Cross
Buy new: $17.17 / Used from: $11.49
While the story, graphics and music are all amazing and superior to Chrono Trigger technically, the overall impact is less effective. But it's still deep with 40 playable characters. The art design has such a unique style.
Final Fantasy VIIIFinal Fantasy VIII
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $9.00
It's a Final Fantasy game, which means it is a perfectly executed RPG experience. This time the Junction system is used for abilities. The reason it's lower than the other two is that the story lacks the mystery and intrigue that makes Final Fantasy supreme. The characters are still fascinating, though.
Resident Evil 2 Greatest HitsResident Evil 2 Greatest Hits
Buy new: $124.99 / Used from: $13.99
The original Resident Evil invented the survival horror subgenre, and RE2 perfected it. It's a solid action experience with a decent story.
Mega Man LegendsMega Man Legends
Buy new: $93.99 / Used from: $8.26
The first 3D Mega Man game was surprisingly great. Combining the classic action feel of the series with RPG elements made it a deep game. Each weapon upgrade can be leveled up several times. The story lasts a while, and it has some replay value as the dungeons are filled with secrets.
GrandiaGrandia
Buy used from: $29.99
Grandia is quite a simple and charming RPG. As it progresses it becomes deep and addictive.
Vagrant StoryVagrant Story
Buy new: $139.84 / Used from: $31.98
It's hard to define this game in terms of genre, as it is definitely one of the most unique games ever made. Essentially, it's an action-RPG. It does not have random encounters, but it does use menues for the battle system. It has one of the deepest weapon development systems you'll ever find. Its downfalls are its mediocre story and bland visual style.
Tomba!Tomba!
Buy used from: $74.99
Tomba is one of the most underrated games of all time. It is the only 2D game on this list, but it does have elements of 3D since you can jump into the background of any level. It mixes platformer, adventure and RPG elements. It's one of the most beautiful looking games ever. It's pure fun.
Brave Fencer MusashiBrave Fencer Musashi
Buy new: $249.99 / Used from: $18.95
This original action-RPG is another one of the most underrated games ever. It has the feel of a Zelda game with platformer and RPG elements.
Parasite EveParasite Eve

PE is a rare combination of sci-fi and horror for the RPG genre. It's an intellectual and moving story with unique gameplay.
