Impressive and moving
I listen to a diverse selection of christian music, but Mr. Wickham was not known to me.
I got the album and good grief - it is extraordinary. In christian music there are many albums that just sounds boring at first listen, and on the 10th. This album is extraordinary - the music is beautiful - the vocals impressive and the message it conveys is also just as good.
There are no bad tracks here but some stand out: Sailing on a ship, Beautiful and True Love are three examples of such.
The album has been a blessing and encouragement to me. Highly recommended!
No Sophmore Slump Here
Phil Wickham will probably be one of those artists that will go underappreciated for a long time to come. One of those rare treasures you will be glad to find. In his sophmore release Cannons, Phil offers up a fresh plate of from the heart lyrics and what it means to be a Christian. This man's relationship with God is so uplifting and powerful and it shows. Songs like "Must I Wait" and "Home" are a testament to this.
The album is a litle more rock (sounds like nostalgic rock at times) than his previous effort but Phil has given it his uniqiue mark which helps the record. The album begins with "Must I Wait" an amazing oepner. One of the lines that really hit you when you're first listening to this track is "how long must I wait for my love cuz I need you oh I need you My heart is bursting and breaking apart for my love." "After Your Heart," in my opinion the weakest of the set, also is a fast paced rock song. Coldplay and Keane really come to mind here as well as some of the mid/late 90s rock bands. "Desire" is more of a softer paced but a great track. After "Cannons" one of the best songs off the album, the music takes a mellower approach with Phil's voice being doubled over and synthized a bit. Although a great addition to the songs, sometimes it can be a tad annoying. Some of the later standouts include "Sailing on a Ship," "True Love," " "Home" and one of my favorite's "Spirit Fall." In the album notes, Phill says he would like to close his shows with this song and was glad he could end the album with this powerful song. I could not agree more.
In comparison to his debut, Cannons is a much stronger effort and sometimes a bit over produced nonetheless it also carries the rawness of Phill's first album, which is a plus. If you don't have this album yet, run now, don't walk to get it.
Awesome CD
I really like Phil Wickham's CD "Cannons". I can easily relate to the passionate words to our Savior.
