A Good Read
J.R. "Model-T" Tate has written an excellent, enjoyable and detailed account of hiking the full length of the Appalachian Trail.
Writing about a long distance backpacking trip is daunting, because much of what is gratifying about the experience is introspective. There is exultation grounded in the sights, sounds and smells of the trail, and there is the internalized search for meaning while struggling with the challenge of the hike. Mr. Tate succeeds in relating these feelings by giving voice to his alter ego, the cantankerous and unrefined Model-T, who is at his best away from civilization.
"Walkin' on the Happy Side" is also rich with interactions between Model-T and the hikers (and a few unwary non-hikers) he encounters during his trek. This is a good read.
ICUFFM
Want a good book about how to hike the AT, then read, "We're Off To See The Wilderness, The Wonderful Wilderness of Awes". It's the most entertaining book and most informative on how to hike lightweight. I'm having a hard time with J.R in this current book... annoying!! Alter ego? Good grief!!
Walkin on the Happy Side of Misery
This is the best reading I've done on the Appalachian Trail. Informative, helpful for prep, and humorous. Highly recommend to anyone contemplating a Thru-hike or just for interesting and funny reading. J R digs down deep to give an all encompassing view of his "walk in the woods". Thank you
