Grand for browsing, too, not just touring
"The Complete Gettysburg Guide" by J. David Petruzzi (text) and Steven Stanley (maps) pretty well lives up to its name -- it covers the Battle of Gettysburg in considerable detail, not just the battle itself, but also peripheral matters such as the town itself, the field hospitals used after the battle, related fights at Hunterstown and Fairfiled, and even rock carvings (and dinosaur footprints!) to be found on the Battlefield. The maps are highly detailed, but clear and easy to follow. And the text gives a comprehensive view of the battle.

Obviously, this is a volume that would prove valuable in driving or walking across the Gettysburg Battlefield, but it is also evident that it is more than that: this is a volume which deserves a permanent spot on the bookshelves of Civil War enthusiasts as a ready reference to the battle. Numerous photographs, mostly modern but some contemporary, illustrate the text, beyond the glorious profusion of detailed topographical maps.

Unbelievable!!
My wife is a nurse and works every other weekend so I needed to find something to do with my time on those weekends alone. My brother and sisters and I have always loved to discuss the Civil War so I thought I would visit Gettysburg every other weekend and become an "unlicensed" battlefield guide when they visited. I live in Manchester Maryland (literally my house is on the Pipe Creek line) so I'm only a half hour away on the Harley. I started collecting personal stories and battlefield maps and finding little known areas of the field to explore. I had just visited the "First Shot" marker and got home to do some research on it when I found this book turn up in one of my searches. What amazed me the most was that nobody had put together a book about Gettysburg like this one until now. It seems so obvious!! I ordered it right away and it has not dissapointed. I have a feeling I will go through a few copies of this book as it will be under my arm on every trip from now on. The hour by hour maps are just what has been missing from other volumes and J.D.'s narrative is spot on. Hearing from the combatants who fought where I stand is especially moving.

I owe J.D. and Steve a cold one if I ever run into them in Gettysburg. They have shortened my learning curve and brightened my future with many enjoyable weekends ... uh that is as enjoyable as it can be without the company of my wife which is really not enjoyable at all ... honey.

THE Battlefield Guide for Gettysburg Nuts
There have been lots of battlefield guides written for those who want to visit Gettysburg. Running the gamut from classics like the Luvaas and Nelson guide to the well-done recent guide by Mark Grimsley and Brooks Simpson, most of them cover the same ground.

What makes The Complete Gettysburg Guide unique is that it covers those actions that others don't. Featuring the superb maps of master cartographer Steve Stanley and excellent historical essays by J. D. Petruzzi, this guide addresses things like the location of rock carvings around the battlefield, hospital sites, actions leading up to the battle, and actions that were tangential to the battle, like the Battle of Fairfield, which occurred on the afternoon of July 3, 1863 a few miles behind the Confederate lines. This book truly is THE complete guide to the Battle of Gettysburg, which should please even the most choosy and particular Gettysburg student.

The book was published in full color, and is a handsome, well-made volume. Stanley's maps and photography go a long way toward rounding out and filling out Petruzzi's well-researched and well-written narrative. Their combined talents make for an enjoyable read.

Simply put, there is no better battlefield guide anywhere in existence. This book has raised the bar for all future battlefield guides and sets a new standard of excellence. I wholeheartedly recommend it to both the Gettysburg novice who wants to truly learn the battlefield as well as to old hands who are looking for new angles to round out their studies. Neither could possibly go wrong in buying this book.
