About the Author
Patti J. Marinelli has been teaching Spanish at the University of South Carolina for the past 25 years. After receiving training in the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview early in her career, she began to focus on proficiency as the organizing principle for her classroom. When the language department decided to refine its placement policy and create new courses for students with previous--but limited--study of Spanish, Marinelli collaborated with colleagues to find the best ways to teach this group of students. For the past several years she has been coordinator of a special course for high-beginners, 'Basic Spanish for Proficiency'.

Lizette Mujica Laughlin, a native of Cuba, is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where she has been on the faculty for over twenty years. She is an ACTFL certified oral and writing proficiency tester/trainer in Spanish/English. Her proficiency training has played a pivotal role in her professional development, for example, as upper-level course coordinator at the University of South Carolina, author, and tester/trainer for ACTFL.
