Product Description

Babies and toddlers with Down syndrome, like all young children, want to discover their world and take on new experiences. I CAN, CAN YOU? is a delightful board book full of babies and toddlers with Down syndrome going about the business of their lives. Presented in crisp, uncluttered, full-color photographs, these children swim, take a bottle, share, eat spaghetti, laugh, play in the park, and more…looking adorable while doing it!

I CAN, CAN YOU? is the perfect book for parents and children to enjoy together. As your child sits on your lap and you read to him, he'll see other children with Down syndrome modelling some things he can do and some which he will soon do. Reinforce your child's abilities ("Look at the baby holding her own bottle. You can do that!") and encourage the possibilities ("Do you see the baby taking off his socks? Can you pull off your socks? I'm sure you can!"). What's more, as your read to your child and as he plays with the book and turns the pages, he will gain important pre-reading skills.

This wonderful book will be reassuring to families with a new baby with Down syndrome and makes a great gift. Daycare centers, hospitals, infant-toddler programs, libraries, pediatric practices, and support groups will want to have I CAN, CAN YOU? available for the families they serve.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K–A board book with color photos of children and variations on "I can…. Can you?" The youngsters are all actively engaged: feeding themselves, playing with blocks, swimming, etc. They are clearly happy and reveling in their newfound abilities. Only the back cover mentions that all of the babies and toddlers in the photos have Down syndrome. The book is probably most reassuring for preschoolers who have Down syndrome, as many disabled children never see kids like themselves in picture books.–Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA

(Bet you can too)5
What a find! With the limited choice of books available in which children who happen to have Down syndrome are depicted in normal, everyday experiences, encountering such an appealing little keeper as I Can, Can You? is heartening.

Pitzer's sturdy, colorful photographic board book with rounded corners is about 5x7 inches, perfectly sized for lap sharing or independent holding. It features fifteen adorable babies and toddlers with Down syndrome, not just posing, but captured as they concentrate on real-life activities.

Most of the children are caucasian. One is of Asian and one of African descent. The photos are clear and expressive, one to a page. The repetitive text is simple and positive: `I can [whatever designated activity]! Can you?' (play patty cake, play with blocks, feed myself, take a bath, go down a slide, swim, draw, find my feet, learn sign language, play by myself, share, smile, play ball, discover my world.)

Unspoken `bet you can too' encouragement comes through loud and clear in this pleasant, engaging infant/toddler book with a friendly tone.

A simple and jubilant read-aloud experience 5
I Can, Can You? is a board book featuring bright color photographs of babies and toddlers with Down syndrome, exploring the world and sharing new experiences. Playing tee-ball, learning sign language, drawing, finding one's feet, each activity is happily related in a phrase "I can... can you?" A simple and jubilant read-aloud experience to share with the very young.

There Needs to be Mre Books LIke This!5
This is a great book! I love that it shows young children with Down Syndrome participating in typical early childhood activities. There need to be more books like this that include children with special needs with out explicitly pointing out their differences.
