great water
I love water with gas! Was purchasing boxes of stuff at Trader Joe's and causing a lot of recycling... now after the NYTimes article I got one of these for my house and as a gift to my sister. We both love it. The water is great. One can adjust the fizz.. I like three whistles. Don't have to worry about sodium (salt) content. Here in the city by the bay (San Francisco) our water is from Hetch Hetchy so it is alreay fresh and from the mountains.
Not such a gas.
Sodastream Penguin Sparkling Water Maker I initially loved this clever soda maker, but have found that I have only been able to get about 1/4 of the number of carafes carbonated for each carbonator which is very frustrating, expensive and renders the entire operation somewhat pointless. I think there is a flaw with the design of the glass carafe which leads to loss of the CO2 each time a carafe is 'fizzed'. I have a friend with the less expensive model that uses plastic bottles and it seems to work much better and longer/carbonator. It is possible that there is something wrong with my unit, but I doubt it. The plastic bottles screw tightly to the carbonator nozzle and very little gas escapes. Also the small size of the carafe (620 ml) is a bit annoying.
Wonderful Product!
The Penguin is a wonderful product! I first saw its "sister" sparkling water maker at a friend's house, and thought the sparkling water it made so refreshing that I wanted to get one for myself. After a little research,I was delighted when I discovered the Penguin, because of its glass carafe. (The less expensive seltzer maker from Soda Club that my friend has works just as well, but has plastic bottles, which I've been trying to avoid when I can; but otherwise it's great too.) It's easy to make the seltzer water, and gives me an incentive to avoid a higher calorie drink in favor of the sparkling water-- which is not only refreshing, but has a festive feeling too. I've always loved sparkling water, but had given up buying it because an opened bottle always went flat before I could finish it, so I felt that I was wasting money. Now I can make a new carafe whenever I need it-- and it lasts well in the fridge too. The Penguin is a bit large, but its sleek and whimsical design is pleasant to look at, and the directions are easy to follow. We often make a fresh carafe of sparkling water just as we sit down to dinner, and it takes only a moment. The Penguin comes with a sampler package of soda flavorings-- something that might be of more interest to others than it was to me, since I am interested in the fresh taste of the sparkling water on its own. But one great feature about Soda Club's flavorings is that they never use corn syrup-- and you CAN taste the difference in the flavors. My own favorite is the tonic water-- which unfortunately does not come with the sampler package; you have to order it separately. But if you're a fan of tonic water, this is a great one-- none of that corn syrup taste that has spoiled most brands of tonic water these days. What we like best, though, is to add a bit of pomegranate juice to a glass of sparkling water-- tastes like a glass of sparkling wine.
The initial price of the Penguin is a bit high, but if you can afford it, it's a wonderful product in every way-- and a great aid to healthy dieting.
